A recent survey of over 1,300 K-12 schools shows a grim outlook for the 2023-2024 academic year. High-poverty districts continue to face massive understaffing, while 45% of all schools report shortages, slightly improved from last year's 53%. The gap in hiring teachers of color is even more alarming—while over half of students are people of color, only 20% of teachers reflect that diversity. Research shows that teachers of color play a crucial role in academic and social-emotional development for ALL students. The clock is ticking.
