What does collaborative leadership look like at EduDream? This week, part of our team met in person at WeWork Uptown to reflect, plan, and prepare for 2025. In two weeks, the entire team will gather in the Chicagoland area to finalize our action plan. Our co-founders, Michelle and Monica, have created a culture that encourages open dialogue, shared responsibility, and collective decision-making. Lately, there’s been a lot of news coverage and research on #studentabsenteeism. Why aren’t students showing up to school? How do we get them to show up? My latest EduDream blog asks, Are students motivated to be in school? Are they engaged in learning? Concerns about student motivation predate the pandemic. If the goal is to recover from #pandemic #learningloss, we must understand the many factors that impact motivation and use evidence to rethink learning. I share three action steps for school and district leaders to spark student motivation, engagement, and persistence. Fostering an environment that supports the academic success of students of color is now more critical than ever. The effects of COVID-19 and a continuously more diverse student population compound this necessity. For Black, Latinx, and students from low-income backgrounds, internal identity beliefs, sense of belonging, and perceptions of others’ beliefs interact with contextual factors, shaping their motivation and engagement. #studentmotivation #edresearch #edleaders #rethinkinglearning

Collaboration is at the heart of our work as researchers, and we’re honored to partner with individuals dedicated to improving education for all students. We recently closed out a project with Vivian P., Mary Reynolds, LCSW (she/her), and Laura Crawford, who are championing greater investment in early childhood care and education in West Cook County, Illinois. Through our 5-year partnership with Illinois Action for Children, we provided research and data analysis support that resulted in a comprehensive community scan of West Cook County. We look forward to seeing how this work informs future investments and drives lasting change in the community!
