Too often, school design falls into predictable traps: ? Aesthetics take precedence over function. ? One-size-fits-all models stifle individuality. ? The program dictates the design instead of the other way around. At Education Design International (EDI), we’ve moved beyond these outdated approaches. ? We prioritize learners’ needs first, ensuring that every space is designed to foster engagement, well-being, and growth. ? Our discovery-driven process allows schools to evolve based on how children actually learn. ? When design leads the program, learning spaces become dynamic, flexible ecosystems—not rigid structures. Schools should reflect the way children learn—not force learning to fit into predefined spaces. Thoughtful school design fosters curiosity, autonomy, and connection, shaping environments where children thrive. #SchoolDesign #EducationInnovation #LearningSpaces #BuildingMinds

At Education Design International, the women on our team don’t just shape learning environments—they shape how education evolves. Their work influences how children experience school, how connections are fostered, and how design can support well-being. Their contributions are not just visible in blueprints, but they are deeply embedded in the way schools function, in the thoughtfulness behind every space, and in the vision of a more connected, human-centered future. Today, we celebrate them—not just for their expertise, but for the perspective, passion, and purpose they bring to everything they do. ?? Because designing schools is about more than just spaces. It’s about designing futures. #WomenWhoDesignTheFuture #InternationalWomensDay #BuildingMinds #WomenInDesign #EDI

?? Childhood Obesity Expected to DOUBLE by 2035! Childhood obesity is projected to rise by 100% between 2020 and 2035 #WorldObesityDay. This isn’t just a statistic—it’s a wake-up call. Schools must be part of the solution. The environments in which children learn and grow shape their lifelong habits and health. Yet, most schools are still designed for static learning—rigid desks, long corridors, and limited opportunities for movement. ?? At Education Design International (EDI), we design "active environments"—learning spaces that seamlessly integrate movement, engagement, and well-being. Insights from our book "A New Language of School Design" highlight how: ? Choice Architecture can nudge students toward healthier behaviors by incorporating ergonomic seating, hydration stations, and active circulation routes. ? Salutogenic Design prioritizes health-promoting spaces that reduce stress and encourage physical, mental, and social well-being. ? Outdoor Learning and Active Zones provide children with dynamic spaces for play, exploration, and movement—counteracting the negative effects of sedentary lifestyles. Schools shouldn’t just "accommodate movement"—they should actively design for it. A well-designed school doesn’t just educate children—it nurtures their health, curiosity, and vitality. ?? How can we rethink school design to support children's lifelong health? Let's discuss. ?? ?? We are often asked what sets Education Design International apart from other school architects. The answer? It’s not just about designing buildings—it’s about designing learning experiences. In this conversation with EduCatalyst Africa, Dr. Parul Minhas shares how EDI goes beyond aesthetics to create schools that truly support how students think, grow, and connect. From research-driven design to deep pedagogical understanding, hear how we shape learning spaces that inspire and transform.
??? Designing Schools for the Future! Did you know there’s a BIG difference between traditional school architecture and salutogenic school design? While both aim to create learning spaces, their goals are worlds apart! ?? Salutogenic Design focuses on wellbeing, natural light, greenery, and fostering community connections to promote health and happiness. ?? Traditional Architecture prioritizes functionality and basic infrastructure without emphasizing holistic well-being. Let’s build schools that inspire, connect, and nurture! ???? The way we design learning spaces should reflect what we know about how children learn, grow, and thrive. Visionary educators and psychologists have long emphasized that: ?? Learning should foster autonomy – Montessori, Krishnamurti, Rogers, Malaguzzi ?? Connection with nature supports well-being – Gandhi, Tagore, Steiner, Froebel ?? Schools should be communities for social learning – Dewey, Vygotsky, Bronfenbrenner ?? Spaces should align with children’s development – Piaget, Gardner, Vygotsky While these thinkers shaped educational philosophy, architects and designers have worked to translate these ideas into meaningful learning spaces. At Education Design International (EDI), we bridge theory and practice, designing schools that support autonomy, connection, and well-being. Take a look at the table! Which educational insight resonates with you the most? #SchoolDesign #Education #LearningSpaces #Connection #ChildDevelopment #Belonging

What happens when you take the expansive design of a 20-acre campus and reimagine it to fit within just two acres—without losing its essence? This was the challenge when Inventure Academy engaged Education Design International (EDI) to design a future-ready K-12 learning ecosystem on a compact site in Bangalore. The goal was not just to build a school, but to redefine space itself. Instead of shrinking the vision, we went vertical—crafting a multi-level learning environment that preserves the ethos of the original campus while making the most of limited space. ?? Vertical Design, Expansive Thinking This isn’t just about stacking floors. It’s about intentionally designed, interconnected spaces that support deep learning, movement, and collaboration—while maintaining a strong sense of identity and purpose. ?? Nature is woven into every level ??? Seamless indoor-outdoor transitions enhance well-being ?? Diverse learning spaces support autonomy, focus, and connection Now featured on Love That Design, Inventure Academy’s new campus is an example of how thoughtful design can transform constraints into opportunities. ??
