The ups and downs of February - catch up on the latest news and happenings from Educational Passages members around the world
关于我们
Students launch pre-built five-foot uncrewed sailboats equipped with a GPS that transmits the vessel’s position twice a day online. The students follow their boats, learning about ocean currents, winds, and waves. When the boats land, we connect students from different nations and cultures, creating transoceanic classrooms.

We are celebrating the first ever USA Blue Schools with National Marine Educators Association as 19 schools completed their action projects in 2024 One of the action projects fostered international collaboration through #oceanliteracy using #miniboats! Big shout out to Morristown Beard School in New Jersey who continued their collaboration with Barryroe NS in Ireland to receive this very special certification and recognition for their work! Fifth grade students from Gaston Elementary in Gaston, Oregon and Wallace Elementary in Kelso, Washington recently spent ten weeks building and preparing miniboats to sail the Pacific Ocean as part of the Columbia River Maritime Museum's miniboat program. #PortVanUSA played a small part in the journey. NYK's Pluto Leader vessel which usually delivers Subarus to the port will take these boats out to the open sea to launch. Students will track their uncrewed miniboats via GPS to follow their journey. Bon Voyage and happy sailing, Greyhound 5 and Wolverine!

We are grateful for our many launchers who have made miniboat voyages possible again and again. The M/V Bermuda Islander is one of our most dedicated launch partners to-date! Over the past 10 years, this cargo ship and crew have consistently brought our projects on-board and then out to sea. The Raven KASTER has been relaunched! A very dedicated group of students in Canada and Ireland have been collaborating for YEARS (including two original students from 2018) to prepare for this moment, which is also being celebrated by the scientists on the R/V Celtic Explorer that deployed it off the coast of Ireland on April 24. “This project provides an exciting way of seeing real life examples of how the ocean has an influence on all our lives, learning how the ocean influences our weather and climate, and the types of technology used,” said Alan Berry of the Marine Institute To learn more about our "cargo upgrade kit" and technologies that went into this upgrade (including sensors and a camera), and if you want to help upgrade more original miniboats and support RElaunches, let us know.
