She paved the way when few believed it was possible. She constructed institutions where there were none. She dedicated her life to paving stepping stones for future generations through education. Nokutela Dube was a trailblazer in South Africa's fight for education. As the first Black South African woman to establish a school, she co-founded the Ohlange Institute in 1901, providing African students with access to learning at a time when opportunities were scarce. A passionate educator, writer, and activist, she believed that knowledge was the key to progress and freedom. Though her contributions were overlooked for decades, her legacy never faded. More than a century after her passing, Nokutela Dube was posthumously honored with the Order of Baobab, one of South Africa's highest national awards, recognizing her exceptional service in education and community development. Her work continues to inspire new generations of leaders, educators, and changemakers. This Women's History Month, we celebrate Nokutela Dube's unwavering commitment to shaping South Africa's educational landscape and the future she helped build.
