It is with deep regret and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our former colleague and leader, John Theodore “Ted” Sanders, who served as President of Education Commission of the States from 2000 to 2005. Ted made many remarkable contributions to Education Commission of the States and to our nation through his esteemed roles that include teacher, chief state school officer, university president and acting U.S. Secretary of Education. His dedication and visionary leadership profoundly shaped the landscape of education policy. As President of Education Commission of the States, Ted’s unwavering commitment to improving education outcomes was especially evident in his support to state education policymakers and our partners. His tireless efforts to promote innovative policies and foster collaborative partnerships set a high standard for excellence and integrity in education. Under his leadership, the Commission not only navigated complex challenges but also seized opportunities to drive meaningful change. Ted’s insights and strategic foresight left an indelible mark on education reform, benefiting countless learners and educators across the nation. As we share our condolences, we also celebrate Ted’s legacy of passion, perseverance and profound impact. We extend our sincerest appreciation for his years of dedicated service and his inspiring commitment to a brighter future for education.

As part of our Chair’s Initiative on Improving Education Access for Justice-Impacted Individuals, Madeleine Kriech and Deven Scott on our State Relations Team traveled to #Kansas this week to experience the education opportunities being provided students experiencing incarceration. We had the chance to engage with faculty, staff and students to hear about the value of these programs to future success — and also participated in welding and accounting classes! Thank you, Zach V., Cris Fanning, Ph.D. and the entire team at the Lansing Correctional Facility. We look forward to continuing to elevate your work as a model for other states!
