Gen Z students want to work. Today, Handshake released it's Internships Index and the research underscores the growing demand for internships and work-based learning experience. ?? Internship postings on Handshake declined by more than 15% between January 2023 and January 2025, while internship applications surged - as of January 2025, 41% of Class of 2025 students had applied to at least one internship through Handshake, compared to 34% of Class of 2023 students at the end of their undergraduate career. As the report details, significant barriers keep students locked out of career-building opportunities: "Students may feel shut out of internships for a variety of reasons, ranging from packed schedules to financial and geographic constraints. Even for students who have ample time and resources, landing an opportunity has become more difficult as hiring contracts and competition increases, and the application process may feel overwhelming given the variation in hiring timelines across employers and industries." This article (by my Trinity classmate, Liz Elting) reflects a sentiment I am hearing relentlessly about recent college graduates: https://lnkd.in/dM73bP-h At Education at Work, we also see some of these challenges, but we recognize the ambition, determination, and commitment of our college-student employees as well. That is why we are committed to finding solutions—integrating durable skill training into our work-based learning opportunities. Our students get great work experience, money for tuition and other expenses, and great training on being good workers. With the demographic cliff in clear sight, rather than dismissing a generation of workers, we need to give them the tools to be successful. We have seen enormous progress and success from the hundreds of students we employ.
