Patricia Leonard, Executive Director, asked Job Corps to be involved last year with building the obstacles and volunteering the day of the event. The Iroquois Job Corps' Youth-to-Youth (Y2Y) Committee recently took a day trip to the Genessee Country Museum. On Friday, October 11, Christine Hallquist, the Vermont Community Broadband (VCBB) Executive Director, visited the Northlands Job Corps campus to meet with center leadership and the Building Construction and Urban Forestry Instructors. They discussed partnership opportunities between Northlands and the newly created VCBB training and apprenticeship program. Congratulations to Iroquois Job Corps student Tramel Bush Jr., who completed the UBC Carpentry trade program this week! He leaves Job Corps with several job opportunities in Rochester, a meeting with the union, and a new toolbox. While at Iroquois, he received his driver's license (yesterday!). Tramel also went on the basketball trip to Rhode Island and was a fantastic team player! Way to go, Tramel! “He’s up on the swing,” says Jason Warner, Foreman of Raymond E. Kelly Inc., pointing to the scaffold at the top of the 12-story building in front of us. Jason is talking about Kevon Parson, an Iroquois Job Corps graduate and a third-year bricklaying apprentice. “He is one of the best workers I’ve got.” From the rooftop of Marguerite Hall on the D'Youville University campus, one has a great view of downtown Buffalo, NY, and Lake Erie. It’s a beautiful late summer day, and Kevon, dressed in a sleeveless t-shirt, is clearly in the zone. He’s replacing the rusty angle irons that the bricks sit on, which wrap around the building at each story. “We’re taking out three courses of bricks, removing the angle, and then going on to the next set,” explains Kevon, adding that they’re also installing flashing so water doesn’t collect behind the bricks. That’s an essential part of masonry restoration, and Kevon’s employer is a leader in the industry. Says Kevon: “When I focus on the brick right in front of me instead of how high I am, it’s not as scary, and I get more done because I’m concentrating on the task at hand.
