?? Yesterday (7th July), we celebrated Kiswahili Language Day, highlighting the importance of Kiswahili in fostering unity, cultural heritage, and social justice. Spoken by millions across East Africa, Kiswahili connects communities and promotes linguistic diversity. By embracing and promoting Kiswahili, we support cultural preservation and inclusivity, ensuring that diverse voices are heard and respected. Let's acknowledge the power of language in bridging gaps and building a more equitable world. • What a powerful, challenging, difficult, and uncomfortable question. Many non-white people have often found themselves grappling with similar questions: Do I have to change my name so everyone can spell it correctly? Do I need to straighten my hair to avoid comments? Should I alter my way of speaking to sound like them? Can I bring food from my culture without judgment? Throughout my career, I've witnessed countless examples of individuals concealing their true selves to avoid questions or comments. I once heard someone say, "Today I'll eat in my car. I don’t want to pretend." Myself, I have asked some of these questions until I decided to just be myself. Everyone deserves to be their authentic selves.

Last week at the Omek summit, I posed a challenging question: how do young people of color navigate the corporate ladder in Europe without feeling pressured to assimilate to the majority group? Reflecting on my own corporate journey, I realize I was guilty of assimilation. I felt there was no other way to progress in my career. It saddens me to see that this pressure still exists for many young professionals. Today, some executives of color (who had to do the same) are working to change the status quo. It's easier to push for change from a position of power, but what about those just starting out? How can they stay true to their identities without hindering their career growth? This is a conversation we need to continue, and it's crucial to find ways to support young people of color in corporate environments so they don't feel the need to compromise who they are to succeed. What strategies have you seen work in your organizations? How can we create an environment where diversity is truly valued and everyone can thrive without having to conform? Disclaimer: I acknowledge that people of color are not the only ones who feel the pressure to assimilate. This question addresses a very specific issue within a broader context. #DiversityAndInclusion #CorporateDiversity #Leadership #CareerGrowth #Authenticity #CorporateCulture #Equality #Inclusion #WorkplaceDiversity #RodVisionInMotion #BeYourself

  • We had such an amazing conversation yesterday with Andie Ayala, M.Ed and Saloni Shavdia ! ??Despite the tough topics—intersectionality and the challenges of DEI in Kenya, the USA, France, and Canada—it was so easy and natural to talk. This is what we call a safe space! We truly appreciate it. ??Saloni is an exceptional individual, and as the founder and CEO of NIRAJKA Consultancy, she champions kindness, caring, and social justice as the foundation of her work. ???? Thank you for this moment.

Let's not forget this is stolen land built upon the tenets of white supremacy, slavery, and white-cis heteronormativity. "Complete and accurate historical context is incredibly important." Couldn't agree more!

I am feeling upset and disappointed at the lack of effort from organizations to tell the complete story of our history. It's crucial to remember who and how our histories are remembered. I've noticed that many organizations, including the National Park Service, are commemorating Frederick Douglass's famous 4th of July speech. While it's one of my favorites, I find it disrespectful to do so on the 4th of July. In reality, Douglass intentionally delivered the speech on July 5, 1852, in New York. The state had abolished slavery in 1827, and abolitionists celebrated July 5 as an important date, referring to July 4th as a "white people's celebration" in recognition of this fact. Therefore, Douglass chose to deliver his speech on July 5th. Complete and accurate historical context is incredibly important. I hope that organizations like the NPS and others will include this significant detail. Let's focus on presenting the full story, rather than condensing it to fit a particular narrative. American history is far from simple and neat; it is complex and multifaceted. #HistoryMatters #ContextMatters #FullStoryMatters #July5 #APAfricanAmericanStudies
