"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn. Let me lead, and I will understand." I decided to go all in with a conversation-based organic classroom culture. We start and end every class with a scientist circle. The purpose is for students to develop a goal and a plan then check-in with one another before leaving. Until today our circle consisted of a desk for each student which took up the entire classroom. I wondered if those desks and the space they create might be a perceived barrier for conversations so today I configured the desks as a "conference table" that everyone could sit around. What a difference! Without the extra distance and devices between them, students in every class were more engaged in conversation. ?? I've been asking questions and searching for answers. What are the causes and effects of chronic absenteeism? What are the possible solutions? I posed a series of questions to Perplexity and the answers were unsurprising. (Admittedly, I am "fishing from a small pond.") ?? Personalized learning approaches ?? Social-emotional learning ?? Technology integration (for democratizing access to knowledge) ?? Building strong teacher-student relationships ?? Expanding learning beyond classroom walls ?? Implementing support systems We know the solutions to it. Why is it still a problem? What part of the solution are we unwilling or unable to face? It must start with relationships! Truly value them when planning professional learning for educators (ALL educators, those who work in the hallways, cafeterias, locker rooms, classrooms, and boardrooms of your schools).
