??Despite Secretary of Education Linda McMahon’s speech on Tuesday about the Department of Education’s “final mission” and the leaked memo yesterday, the timing of issuing an executive order (EO) to dismantle the Department of Education continues to be delayed. The impending EO’s sole purpose is to destroy the guardrails that have long served to open up educational opportunities for all students — particularly students of color, students from low-income backgrounds, students with disabilities, and multilingual learners. Moreover, this is designed to erode the public’s trust in an institution that currently serves more than 50 million K-12 students and 15 million students in post-secondary education. We firmly believe that gutting the Department of Education will cause irreparable damage to our nation’s students. In order to #SaveOurStudents, public education must be not only preserved but enhanced. Together, we can reimagine an education system in a way that will better serve all students, who represent the future of America.

We’re calling for a State Commission on Black Education Transformation. Why? Because, as our new #BlackMindsMatter2025 report shows, California’s fragmented education governance is failing Black students at almost every turn. Learn more about the alarmingly slow pace of progress statewide—despite change agents and plenty of evidence-based strategies we point to—in Black Minds Matter 2025: Building Bright Black Futures. www.BlackMindsMatter.org #BlackMindsMatter #BlackMindsMatter2025

In the areas of chronic absenteeism, suspension and reading proficiency, the rates for Black students in California remain largely the same as they were a decade ago. That is the focus of a new report,?Black Minds Matter 2025, which provides new insight and recommendations on education for Black students in California a decade after the?first iteration?of the report was published by?EdTrust-West.
