The EDSAFE AI Alliance aims to promote AI's safe, accountable, fair, and equitable (SAFE) use in education.? Led by a Steering Committee of leading education, technology, and learning organizations, the Alliance joins forces to address one of our time's most pressing educational policy challenges. Anchored in the SAFE framework, EDSAFE focuses on policy development and support at the federal, state, and local level through our education and advocacy efforts. We support the field through a national network of district-level policy labs and a groundbreaking fellowship to build the field's capacity.

    ?Ensuring Equity in AI for Education ? As AI becomes an increasingly integral part of the educational landscape, it's crucial that we ensure these technologies are used in ways that promote fairness, equity, and inclusivity. The U.S. Department of Education has released a vital new resource for school communities, helping them navigate the complexities of AI use while ensuring compliance with federal civil rights laws. AI has the potential to enhance opportunities and foster educational equity, but without careful oversight, its widespread adoption in schools—whether for instructional tools, school safety, or administrative purposes—can unintentionally contribute to discrimination. This new guidance offers valuable insights into: -How AI can promote equity for all students -The legal framework schools must follow to avoid discriminatory practices -Examples of AI applications that could raise concerns under civil rights laws -How the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) evaluates potential discrimination in AI use. Educators, administrators, and policymakers must be proactive in understanding these issues to ensure that AI serves all students equitably and does not inadvertently perpetuate bias or discrimination. This new resource from U.S. Department of Education is an essential tool for anyone in education looking to responsibly integrate AI into their schools and institutions.     Today, Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) and the Council of the Great City Schools announced the addition of the Academic AI Literacy Readiness Domain to the K-12 Generative AI (Gen AI) Maturity Tool.?The new module assesses the extent to which educators are prepared to integrate AI technologies into educational practices, ensuring that these tools contribute positively to the learning environment and enhance student outcomes.     The demand to meet changing workforce needs and an effort to stay globally competitive whether in #AI or #cybersecurity or #computerscience all need one thing - EDUCATORS! Our efforts will fail if we don’t have enough highly qualified educators to teach students these (often challenging) ideas and concepts. To build knowledge, not fear of these technologies, and equip our young people with the skills and competencies they need for an ever-changing world. Yet, with a decade-long decline in teacher workforce entry, we have some serious work to do, or we risk leaving many students and communities behind (just as the digital divide grows exponentially). I joined Zarek Drozda, Talia Milgrom-Elcott, Pat Yongpradit to draft a new national CTA to reinvigorate the teaching profession in the eyes of policymakers and the public. With the many calls for #DigitalFrontierSkills, we need to start treating teaching as the job it already is: prestigious, challenging, critical for the economy, critical for national competitiveness. That’s what other countries do. (And last time I looked we are losing ground - now ranked 29th in the world in primary education) Regardless of the direction the new administration takes, we are forwarding a number of specific and bipartisan recommendations for U.S. Federal agencies to consider through the Federation of American Scientists hashtag #DayOne program. We need a national movement that can be supported by states like we have done with registered teacher apprenticeships through The Pathways Alliance. Thank you to Melissa Moritz, Patricia Saenz-Armstrong, and Meghan Grady Serrano for their input and thoughtful ideas on this work.
