AI education policy, practice, and research with the SAFE framework - safety, accountability, fairness, and efficacy
关于我们
The EDSAFE AI Alliance aims to promote AI's safe, accountable, fair, and equitable (SAFE) use in education.? Led by a Steering Committee of leading education, technology, and learning organizations, the Alliance joins forces to address one of our time's most pressing educational policy challenges. Anchored in the SAFE framework, EDSAFE focuses on policy development and support at the federal, state, and local level through our education and advocacy efforts. We support the field through a national network of district-level policy labs and a groundbreaking fellowship to build the field's capacity.

Teaching our young children to be engaged participants in our society and economy is the most essential job in our country.?Yet the competitiveness and appeal of teaching in the United States has plummeted over the past decade. The new administration should announce a national talent surge to identify, scale, and recruit into innovative teacher preparation models, expand teacher leadership opportunities, and boost the profession’s prestige. The demand to meet changing workforce needs and an effort to stay globally competitive whether in #AI or #cybersecurity or #computerscience all need one thing - EDUCATORS! Our efforts will fail if we don’t have enough highly qualified educators to teach students these (often challenging) ideas and concepts. To build knowledge, not fear of these technologies, and equip our young people with the skills and competencies they need for an ever-changing world. Yet, with a decade-long decline in teacher workforce entry, we have some serious work to do, or we risk leaving many students and communities behind (just as the digital divide grows exponentially). I joined Zarek Drozda, Talia Milgrom-Elcott, Pat Yongpradit to draft a new national CTA to reinvigorate the teaching profession in the eyes of policymakers and the public. With the many calls for #DigitalFrontierSkills, we need to start treating teaching as the job it already is: prestigious, challenging, critical for the economy, critical for national competitiveness. That’s what other countries do. (And last time I looked we are losing ground - now ranked 29th in the world in primary education) Regardless of the direction the new administration takes, we are forwarding a number of specific and bipartisan recommendations for U.S. Federal agencies to consider through the Federation of American Scientists hashtag #DayOne program. We need a national movement that can be supported by states like we have done with registered teacher apprenticeships through The Pathways Alliance. Thank you to Melissa Moritz, Patricia Saenz-Armstrong, and Meghan Grady Serrano for their input and thoughtful ideas on this work.

From the Office for Civil Rights, Department of Education is important guidance and seven scenarios about #AI use in education. The resources make clear that AI technologies have the potential to enhance opportunities and increase educational equity for all students. However, the growing use of AI in schools, including for instructional and school safety purposes, and AI’s ability to operate on a mass scale can create or contribute to discrimination. The resource provides information on the legal analyses that OCR uses to determine whether discrimination exists?and provides examples of conduct that, depending on facts and circumstances, could?present OCR with sufficient reason to open an investigation. This clarity will help schools ensure accountability, fairness transparency, and, above all, safety in the use of these tools. EDSAFE AI Alliance applauds this effort to provide clear, use case based information. https://lnkd.in/e3tzzdEX

EDSAFE AI Alliance had the honor of attending the Encode Justice Empowering Voices Summit yesterday.?We were moved by the critical discussions surrounding the dangers of AI-generated nonconsensual deepfakes and the urgent need to address this emerging threat. The summit shed light on the impact of this digital content, particularly on its victims, and the glaring lack of safeguards and procedures currently in place to tackle it. The conversations shed light on the emotional, psychological, and social harm caused by deepfake exploitation in our increasingly digital world. It was a sobering reminder of the lack of robust policies and frameworks in place to combat these threats and the pressing need for collective action to create a safer, more secure digital environment for all. A heartfelt thank you to?Encode Justice?for hosting this summit and to the advocates, experts, and changemakers who are leading this fight. Thank you, Francesca Mani, for sharing your story and using your voice to bring attention to this issue. Together, we can protect the most vulnerable among us and work toward a future where technology is a force for good.
