Lisa Nagle, AICP, RLA, EDR Planning Practice Leader, began her journey studying geography, captivated by how land and people interact. Today, she uses that passion to help communities revitalize waterfronts, brownfields, and downtowns, creating spaces that inspire investment and growth while preserving their unique identity! "Like many Planners, I didn’t start out as a ‘planner’ per se. I started my journey as a geography major, fascinated by how land, people, and the environment interact.?This broad background gave me a deeper understanding of the physical and social landscapes that shape our world. Over time, I realized I wanted to do more than just study these patterns — I wanted to play an active role in shaping them. That’s when I discovered community planning, and everything connected! I began working with multidisciplinary teams of landscape architects, GIS specialists, engineers, architects, and others and I became excited about combining Planning with the practices to not only envision and create new spaces but also provide communities with the tools to sustain their long-term vision. Whether it’s zoning policies or land use strategies, I enjoy helping shape places where people can thrive, while preserving what makes each community unique. Today, I truly enjoy working with our clients to revitalize their waterfronts, brownfield sites, and downtowns to bring renewed interest, investment, and a sense of identity helping to transform them into thriving economic and cultural centers." #ABetterEnvironment #NationalPlanningMonth #CommunityPlanning

Sam Gordon, EDR Planning Practice Leader, brings over 20 years of experience turning ideas into action. From revitalizing Syracuse neighborhoods to designing Spain’s Anillo Verde, Sam’s work creates lasting, community-driven impact! "I have been working in the field of planning for over two decades. During that time, I have worked at a variety of scales and in different contexts. I began my career with the City of Syracuse in the late 1990s, during a period when the city was particularly focused on neighborhood revitalization. Through the “Syracuse Neighborhood Initiative,” I was involved in developing multiple neighborhood revitalization strategies across the city. This program ignited my interest in effective community engagement and a data-driven approach to community planning. Additionally, I have worked at the regional level on developing actions and strategies related to climate mitigation and resiliency from the perspective of local municipal action. I also served as a planning director for a local government, which offered me the opportunity to directly experience the administration of local zoning and craft new zoning tools to foster the development of mixed-use, walkable neighborhoods. During my time as planning director, I developed and oversaw “Elevating Erie,” an international ideas competition that led to constructing a portion of the New York Empire State Trail along Erie Boulevard between the Town of DeWitt and the City of Syracuse in Central New York. Each of these experiences has informed my approach to leading the planning practice at EDR, where we focus on looking beyond what exists to help communities envision what they want to be and how to get there. In 2005, I had the distinct opportunity to live and work in the Basque region of Spain in the City of Vitoria-Gasteiz. I worked for the Center for Environmental Studies (Centro de Estudios Ambientales or CEA) during the Fall of that year. The CEA was developing the Anillo Verde (Green Ring), one of the most successful greenbelt systems in the European Union. I was tasked with developing the preliminary design for a portion of the Anillo Verde in Salburua Park, an engineered wetland at the northeastern edge of the city. This was a life-changing experience, and I had the chance to return in 2018 to speak about my work on Elevating Erie." #ABetterEnvironment #NationalPlanningMonth #CommunityPlanning
