The EDPS is the European Union’s independent data protection authority. We monitor and ensure the protection of personal data and privacy when EU institutions and bodies process the personal information of individuals. We advise EU institutions and bodies on all matters relating to the processing of personal information. We are consulted by the EU legislator on proposals for legislation and new policy development. We also cooperate with national supervisory authorities and other supervisory bodies to improve consistency in protecting personal information. In our supervisory role, we monitor and ensure that the EU institutions comply with data protection rules. Among the many crucial topics he addressed, his emphasised the need of a strong cooperation at the European level. The Supervisor highlighted the essential work carried out within the European Data Protection Board and the broader collaboration among Data Protection Authorities, especially in cross-border cases, and in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence. On AI, he underscored the Council of Europe Convention on AI, which aims to align technological progress with fundamental rights, democracy and the rule of law, while setting common standards for responsible AI use. Today, our Head of International Cooperation, Olivier Matter, contributed to a discussion on Data Protection, Diplomacy, and Regulatory Cooperation, focusing on the crucial role of the GPA and the Council of Europe in shaping data protection policies for International Organisations and the humanitarian sector. Tomorrow, Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiorowski will engage in the debate bringing the experience of the long-term cooperation with International Organisations.

This morning, the Grand Chamber of the #CJEU heard arguments in Case C-698/23 P, EDPS v Parliament and Council, concerning the EDPS’s standing before the Court. The EDPS seeks to annul Articles 74a and 74b of the amended Europol Regulation, arguing that they interfere with his prior enforcement decision against Europol. Today marks one year since the Digital Markets Act’s obligations started to apply to the six designated gatekeepers. ? On this anniversary, the High-Level Group, composed by nominated representatives coming from six European networks and bodies, is meeting today in Brussels with Executive Vice-President Teresa Ribera and the European Commission’s DMA team that she leads together with Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen.
