?? Data Transparency is Always Beneficial, Right? ?? NOT true - and here is why: I am seeing far too many people make this dangerous mistake… It is worrying… ? While transparency can, of course, bring clarity and highlight areas of concern, too much openness can cause even more problems than it solves! I wrote extensively about lots of everyday case studies in my first book "Making Data Work" ?? Take banks, for example: How transparent should they be? ?? If banks were totally transparent, imagine the chaos - you would likely see lots of people rushing to withdraw their money all at once, leading to unnecessary panic and financial instability! ?? There are plenty more case studies where transparency is a double-edged sword… ?? But, the bottomline is this: ? Overexposing sensitive information can lead to undesirable consequences ? Increased scrutiny can slow decision-making and create resistance ? What’s meant to clarify can sometimes confuse or overwhelm ?? The Solution? Balance is Key! ? Implement a “need-to-know” approach: share data that drives understanding without drowning stakeholders in unnecessary details ? Create clear guidelines on what to share, with whom, and why ? Keep communication contextual: Transparency is valuable when it is meaningful! ?? My key takeaway: Strive for transparency with clear purpose - not just transparency for transparency’s sake ?? Here are highlights from my session??'Data: The Power, The Perils, and The Potentials'???focused on how to get beyond the distant AI hype and truly get to the value that is relevant in our own individual situations, in the real world... Some key highlights include: ? Data has Great POWER - but with this Great Power must come Great Control! ? Data?has NO real Value - its Power comes NOT from its existence but from the PROBLEMS that we ask it to solve ?? So, We must?Stop?Calculating the VALUE of DATA and Start Calculating the VALUE of PROBLEMS Also, as there is NO consistency in the Perceived Value of Data, we must: ?? Know who your true "customer" actually is - and note that this might not be the "budget" holder ?? The impact of Data or AI change might not be positive across the firm and ultimately for us all ?? We must be careful to connect the dots across our use cases and to find win-wins Changing outdated perspectives of data value requires 3 things: ?? First, We Must Come to a NEW Point of Understanding ?? Second, We Need a NEW Model of Reality ?? Third, We Need to Starting Building NEW Bridges Importantly... It’s about the right actions based on predictions & objectives ?? It’s dynamic, adaptive, and ultimately focused on optimising outcomes But there’s a challenge: ?
