For decades, The Nation’s Report Card has used student eligibility for the National School Lunch Program (often known as free- and reduced-price lunch) to identify students who have fewer economic advantages and less access to resources. But this measure taps only the economic part of socioeconomic status. Starting with the 2024 Nation’s Report Card, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) will report a new composite measure — the Socioeconomic Status (SES) Index — to describe students’ opportunities more fully.
