From Erie Canal heritage to food tech innovation, Western New York continues to inspire while adding to my understanding of place-based storytelling. Sharing my winter 2024 article for Edible Western NY & Erie Lakeshore, which explores how Buffalo-based FoodNerd is revolutionizing shelf-stable food through groundbreaking cold-processing technology. ?? https://lnkd.in/gzHnRJR4 What particularly struck me was how this women-led company embodies the region's evolution: agricultural roots, manufacturing heritage, and emerging tech sector converging to address global nutritional challenges. As with my previous piece on Bent's Opera House, I find myself documenting how the region’s people and institutions are reimagining tradition while building toward the future. Inspired by?local growers, we explore the suppliers of our regional food system in the new summer issue. In “The Hands that Feed Us”, we talked with?wholesale cooperative Eden Valley Growers as well as the owners of Abers Acres, an organic farm in Kennedy. The?region’s largest organic farm—Thorpe’s Organic Family Farm—is also featured, along with Grandma Stage’s Peach Farm in North East, PA. The dedication, resilience and kindness of the families who nurture those crops year after year, generation to generation stands out as a common theme. Spring is the season for new beginnings—a time to reset. It calls for patience, watching for the days to grow longer, the seeds to stir and roots to grow. This year, in particular, we are especially keen on the returning light as we anticipate a darkening shroud. The entire region is on pins and needles, preparing and waiting for the 2024 total solar eclipse.
