?? KubeCon 2024 in Salt Lake City is wrapping up today, and it was awesome. Absolutely packed and one of the best events I've gone to in some time. Wonderful to see old friends and make new ones all in a setting that feels organic. There's also a high level of technical skills and genuine curiosity about the future of orchestration, platform, and infrastructure management. Edge Delta is thankful for the opportunity to have been a sponsor! I received a lot of great questions from hundreds of different conversations, but here were the top three: ?? 1. How do I standardize data from K8s and other sources? This is the value provided by the open telemetry movement, which has quite obviously achieved "arrived" status in my book. Whether your data is coming from network sources with tcp/udp, whether it's data from a traditional log file, or stdout streams, or the K8s api, or you want to pull from S3, or you need to take in a portion of data from Kafka, of any other use case, OTel gives you a way to standardize with a specification, protocol, schemas, and more. We love to say "any source, any destination" and the open flexibility in the ecosystem offers a lot of choice to engineering teams. ?? 2. How can my team better understand Open Telemetry? OTel gives you a phenomenal amount of flexibility but time and time again I heard people say their engineers are then required to have an extremely sophisticated mental model in their heads about all the various streams and routes of data going from various sources to destinations. Telemetry Pipelines is a great option here as it gives you the aforementioned benefits but with a level of clarity and visibility that most teams have never had before. ?? 3. How should teams across a large org operationalize OTel Pipelines? There are a lot of ways to be able to get started very quickly, but for more complex use cases Telemetry Pipelines gives visibility, control, flexibility, fleet management, out of the box optimization, data enrichment, and routing logic all in a way that feels scalable in sustainable for large teams.
