Fuel retailers face daily challenges such as fluctuating costs, unpredictable volumes, fierce competition, changing consumer habits, staffing difficulties, business rates, and taxes. So, how can they optimise their pricing? It can be done by focusing on these five pillars: Volumes: The market is now volume-driven, with a consensus (cited by the Energy Information Administration) that fuel volumes will be reduced by 2050 owing to the increasing availability of alternative fuels. This means that every litre or gallon of fuel sold must create more profit to achieve the same results. Strategies should focus on growing the right volumes at the right time with the right products. Margins: Margin data are often under-utilised owing to cost restrictions. Previously, retailers based margins solely on replacement costs. By connecting to the point of sale and tank gauges, EdgePetrol provides a real-time blended cost number, offering more up to date information for retailers to optimise their businesses. Competition: Successful retailers frequently review competitors and adjust pricing to test sensitivity. “We just beat ChatGPT and Claude…” If you’re an engineer and worry about AI taking your job, don’t (or at least not for now) The Engineering team at EdgePetrol have been looking at ways to assess someone's ability to solve problems as part of our hiring process. More and more engineers are using AI during the interview process with ever growing accessibility of different AI tools. This means finding the right method of skill assessment has become even harder. Long gone are the days of asking candidates to solve problems using pseudo code or using a niche question found on the internet - AI is pretty good at solving those. We hate long interview processes as much as any engineer so finding the right set of questions that can quickly and accurately assess someone's fit into a team is crucial. We also love AI, we leverage AI tools for our day-to-day tasks but rely on our team members to identify when hallucinations occur and have the ability to correct these mistakes. As a result, we came up with a simple puzzle that when entered into ChatGPT or Claude will hallucinate and produce completely incorrect answers. This puzzle can be solved within 10 minutes by a human. I’m sure AI tools will eventually catch up and solve this type of puzzle much faster but at that point I'd be more worried about these systems becoming self aware and Skynet becoming a real threat. Climbing out of a ditch puzzle Oh no! You have fallen into a ditch 30 metres deep and you need to get out as quickly as you can. During the fall you have injured yourself so climbing is difficult. Within daylight hours you are only able to climb a total of 5 metres. You have observed daylight hours to be between 7am-7pm. You also need time to create camp every night to protect yourself from nocturnal creatures, this takes you 2 hours and needs to be done before daylight ends. You are not able to make the climb without gathering essentials like food and water. 1 day of gathering covers you for 3 days of climbing, during gathering time you do not make any progress in your climb. ?? Question 1 How many days will it take you to climb out? ?? Question 2 Assuming you start each day at the start of daylight hours. On the final day, at what time would you be out? ?? Question 3 You are able to climb through the night once every 3 days, however your progress through the night is slower. You are only able to climb at a rate of 0.2 metres per hour during the night.
