    Cookie banners can crunch Core Web Vitals when they cause layout shift (as Shawn O'Neill explains) ???? so can any top-sliding promo bars you may be using through #BFCM ?Make sure to either reserve space in your header for these later-arriving elements, or change how you serve cookie notices - layout shift impacts #UX Also check Page Speed Insights to make sure your cookie gate isn’t registering as your LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) ?? I see it too often – cookie gate is the LCP, served through a 3p app with JS and later-loading (after page content) – a losing combo! ???? But who’s got time to manually check Page Speed Insights all the time? ?? Linking to featured collections like bestsellers, trendy collections and top categories ? Highlighting value propositions (USPs) on PLPs and PDPs ?? As Hx headings for recommendation settings ? But WHY ? ? ? Animated text draws eyeballs to your messaging ?? at key touchpoints #Shopify themes like BORDERS from Krown Themes let you easily add scrolling text sections to most any page ?? And customize them with clickable buttons, emoji and color/text styling ??     Do those deal drawers you see on GAP and Old Navy really convert? ???? They sure do for KitchenAid – just ask Kevin Turchyn and Conversion Their A/B test did so well they had to triple check their results I’ve seen them stick around on sites like David’s Tea as well ? But of course, this doesn’t mean they’ll work for your site & customer And there are alternative design patterns you may want to try out with an A/B testing tool like Convert.com ?? If you’re running multiple #BFCM deals this year, this may be the drawer of your dreams ???? #ecommerce #UX #merchandising #shopify

    Swapping product photos to represent a wide variety of body types is an #inclusive Product and Category page #ecommerce feature. Alo Yoga has a solid build here, replacing on-model photography with models of different shapes and sizes to better represent their customers. (Can't say we see that often in yoga!) From a performance perspective, this "model swap" is no more or less performant than having more product images. To do this well: 1?? Ensure you are loading only the visible model images immediately, prioritizing above-the-fold images over assets that may never be seen, or enter the viewport. Deprioritize the rest. 2?? Load your LCP assets without requiring #Javascript, ideally rendered from the initial #HTML response from the server. Alo Yoga is doing an excellent job loading only what’s necessary, thus keeping their PDP at peak performance. Like this content and want more?     Why would a #shopify agency buy a Premium theme from the Theme Store when they could build themselves? For example, Vevol Media - Shopify Partners have their own approved theme in the Store (Noblesse) but are also partnered with Krown Themes and use their themes often So I asked Dan Nistor, Vevol’s Co-Founder and CEO ?? how do they decide to buy vs build for a client? ?? With web development, every billable hour counts And those hours can be stretched with a kickstarter theme that checks most of the boxes So agencies can focus budget on building custom requirements ?? Dan looks for clean theme code, which helps stretch that development budget even further They’d rather build 2 hours building a feature on a clean theme than 10 hours building the same feature on a messy one ?? This also highlights the TCO of themes (Total Cost of Ownership) We talk a lot about TCO for back end software, but it’s definitely a budget buster and innovation roadblock to stay on the wrong theme ??     User testing by Baymard Institute found shoppers actively look for UGC? ?? images & ??? video on PDPs, but 67% of merchants don’t have any to show? ?? Of the merchants that do, how are they leveraging it? The lowest hanging fruit is to promote reviews with photos to the top of the list (some review apps enable filtering to just reviews with media) ? But Baymard notes that shoppers were looking for more than just images attached to reviews Some sites have found creative ways to present reviews and review-like with special sections, like featured review carousels and photo walls Another trend is to curate UGC from social platforms using an app like Tolstoy, Videowise, Whatmore, Firework, Vestico or Tagbox These tools embed widgets in the Buy Box or other content section on the page But truly organic UGC is hard to get from customers at scale for every product So most brands will use a combo of organic and incentivized (influencer) or brand produced media to optimize the experience ?? If you’re concerned about performance, many of these shoppable video apps are optimized for minimal payloads But all page content adds to your total load - so the impact isn’t zero Make sure the widgets load after primary content and have space reserved in your HTML to avoid layout shift ?? This video’s sponsored by Convert.com so let’s talk #UX and conversion factors First you want to test with and without the widgets – a popular strategy is to choose one or a few highly trafficked pages for the test vs every PDP Especially given some will have more available media than others If you choose to place the widget below the fold in your first test, set up your test to only include visitors that scroll far enough to see it This tweak means the test will take longer but will be much more reliable ?? Widget design and how you merchandise your video will also impact your test results Thumbnails that are small or don’t provide any hint to what the video is about won’t get many clicks Consider adding titles on or around the thumbs And video sort order matters Prioritize the most authentic videos. Remember WHY shoppers want to see UGC They want realistic, relevant and trustworthy clips that support their purchase decision #ecommerce #merchandising

    Baymard Institute recently shared research findings recommending using social-sourced UGC on PDPs (link in comments) Many #dtc sites use apps to embed social videos in the Buy Box section – but how does this impact web performance? Shawn O'Neill from SpeedSense Web Performance analyzes this example using Tolstoy Because this is “secondary” content and shouldn’t compete with loading primary content, the first check is for when this pops in relative to other elements ?? Tip: test using a “choked” 3G network setting in your Inspect tools and clear cache/refresh the page In this case, it’s OK – but a different issue is detected Layout shift Make sure to reserve space in your HTML for the widget to load so this doesn’t happen Most apps that enable this feature have reasonably small payloads - so this isn’t a performance killer (in general) However, as always, placing in the Buy Box has pros and cons (most apps have built-in A/B testing for this) On Monday we’ll dive into this topic deeper into different ways you can leverage UGC on PDPs aside from this particular pattern ????
