Steel is going green. Steel production currently accounts for 7-9% of all fossil fuel emissions, making it one of the toughest sectors to green. But Sweden-based global steel company SSAB is showing it can be done. With the help of a €128 million state aid package from the European Commission, SSAB is decarbonising its steel production in Sweden. They are shifting from coal-fired blast furnaces to electric arc furnace technology. They are powered entirely by renewable energy and will produce 2.5 million tonnes of carbon-neutral steel each year. This innovation will cut Sweden’s CO? emissions by an impressive 7%. This is the type of bold action we need to meet climate targets and decarbonise supply chains globally.
