Navigating the Future of Learning: An Architect's U.S. Perspective As an architect specializing in education, Adrian Ritter recently had the privilege of touring innovative schools across the U.S. From New York City to Seattle to San Francisco, he was inspired by the designs that are shaping the future of learning. Key Takeaways: ? Vertical Schools: The Avenues in NYC showcased how to maximize limited urban space with a five-level design. This sparked ideas for our South African context, where Adrian De Waal Ritter has developed vertical school prototypes for Johannesburg and Cape Town. ? Technology Integration: Schools like St. Thomas in Seattle and High Tech High in San Diego are seamlessly integrating tech into learning spaces. The Microsoft Visitor Centre's augmented reality demo highlighted the immense potential of these tools. ? Flexible Design: Adaptable spaces with modular furniture and reconfigurable partitions were a recurring theme, emphasizing the need for schools to evolve with changing pedagogies. ? Inclusivity: Santa Margarita Catholic High School's dedication to learners with special needs was a powerful reminder of the importance of creating welcoming environments for all. This journey reinforced the idea that great school design goes beyond aesthetics. It's about fostering collaboration, sparking curiosity, and preparing students for the real world. On our educational institution tour in Japan, we visited the new campus of?Yokohama International School. School director?Craig Coutts?led us on a tour, during which he explained how they managed to engage a renowned architect in designing the school and what compromises had to be made to create a comfortable educational environment that includes space for meditation, tea ceremonies, and making mochi. Our Project Leader Elena Vavilova wrote a short review, and a detailed text about visiting the School is in the article https://lnkd.in/dzGCpPQj
Several months ago we visited Tokyo with EdDesignMag for a study trip: to have a closer look at the educational architecture of Japan, to meet colleagues working in International and local schools. This was an amazing and inspiring experience: catching the atmosphere and schools and kindergartens, seeing how traditions are gently included into the modern educational situation and building. Craig Coutts, Head of Yokohama International School, found a possibility to lead us on a tour, to tell the story of the collaboration with KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES on design (amazing how deep and careful was the architects' personal attention to the project), explain the challenges behind the project. These and much more interesting details we collected in the text - please go to EdDesign Mag and have a look :) https://lnkd.in/gJxyPX7x PS My personal top list: wooden facade that lives its life getting older and slightly changing the color with the time; Japanese style space for meditations and tea ceremonies with the view to the roof top garden; and the open space art block with the amazing atmosphere of creativity where different age students freely mix with each other?
