I promise you, this is NOT the way I wanted to start off Black History Month. Over the past few days it seems everybody is a DEI expert. Especially those who have continually been running around sharing the statistic that only 4% of those who work within DEI are Black. Often sharing the below headline, the implication seems to be, "Calm down, Black people! Why are you worried? Only 4% of us benefit from this anyway!" Let me tell you right now, that line of thinking as well as that headline itself, is a lie from the pit of hell. If there's one thing I've continued to hold onto from my doctoral training it's my understanding of statistics and my predisposition for determining the original source of said statistics. So after digging into this data point a bit, I discovered that the 4% figure only relates to Chief Diversity Officers (a C-Suite Position), NOT ALL DEI professionals. Trust and believe, it ain't breaking news that Black people are underrepresented in the C-Suite. That said, here's why misquoting this statistic matters. If the importance of DEI is diminished, so will the desire to do what's necessary to protect it. And when that happens, negative impacts will not only be felt throughout the workplace (well beyond DEI positions, btw), they'll also be felt when it comes to contracting opportunities for Black businesses. This is not the time to retreat. It's the time to fight. Who’s with me?

The modern workplace places an overwhelming emphasis on managerial responsibilities. As organizations prioritize efficiency, compliance, and performance metrics, many professionals are trained to manage rather than lead. This has created a deficit of true leaders capable of driving innovation and inspiring change.? - Dr. Fernando Branch
