See how Ecotone is using nature to restore nature at our native nursery!
January is a critical time for barn owls as they begin searching for a place to nest. We have been working tirelessly at Ecotone in the Land Management department to put together boxes that barn owls can call home this season. At the native nursery we wanted a way to control rodents that make nests by burrowing in pots. These rodents such as mice will eventually damage the growing tree to a fatal point. Traditionally agricultural and ecological industries use traps and pesticides/poisons. The previous approach is not only expensive but inhumane to the entire surrounding ecosystem. A buffet of rodents infected with pesticides is dangerous to owl populations. Barn owls are a natural predator of mice. Working in ecological restoration it is imparitive we examine natural processes for an increasingly more sustainable solution.
