??One year ago, we set out on a mission to transform food waste into valuable materials, and we couldn’t have done it without YOU—our partners, collaborators, and supporters. ?? Since starting from the ground floor at Newlab at Michigan Central, we've been able to build a strong foundation to support companies at the early-stage of their supply chains wanting to meet the rising demand for more environmental safe and sustainable products. As we keep up the momentum from an incredible first year, we’re already developing new tech solutions to help manufacturers transition into the green economy, scaling our pilots to the next level, and branching to new product categories. Together, we’ve: ? Diverted 2K+ lbs of waste from landfills ? Developed 5+ new material recipes from upcycled food waste ? Partnered with 10+ businesses and non-profits committed to circular solutions ? Launched 4 real-world pilots to scale sustainable innovation for pilots material alternatives with our partners, and micro-mobility logistics deployment with Orange Sparkle Ball, Inc. & Intermode ? Engaged 130+ attendees at Waste to Wonder 2024 at Newlab during the Detroit Month of Design Your belief in our vision has helped turn waste into opportunity, and we’re just getting started (literally ?? ). Thank you for being part of this journey—we can’t wait to grow, innovate, and make an even bigger impact together. ???? #ThankYou #EcosphereOrganics #OneYearOfImpact #CircularEconomy #WasteToResource Black Tech Saturdays Michigan Economic Development Corporation Urban Tech Xchange NextEnergy Michigan Sustainable Business Forum Make Food Not Waste Sanctuary Farms RCE Detroit Windsor Wayne State University

For Women's History Month, we're highlighting innovators in Michigan Central's ecosystem. Brittanie Dabney has turned a passion for environmental science and research into a business that not only finds new uses for organic waste, but creates the ability for systemic change. As the co-founder of Ecosphere Organics, Dabney and her team pursue the mission of reducing food waste, while also working to strengthen supply chains, reduce greenhouse gases and build economic opportunities for future generations in the city of Detroit. Her research includes discovering the effect microplastics, toxic chemicals and other contaminants have on aquatic life. “The idea that our work can help reshape industries and contribute to a more sustainable world is what keeps me motivated every day,” said Dabney. “What excites me most is that every day, we’re proving that organic waste isn’t just something to discard, it’s a valuable resource that can be reimagined into sustainable materials, products, and solutions.” Dabney also encourages the next generation of women to create their own path for success, trust their instincts and never be afraid to be different. She adds: “The world needs your ideas, your leadership, and your vision. You’ll face moments of doubt, but remember that resilience and adaptability are your greatest strengths. Surround yourself with a strong network of mentors and peers who uplift you, and always be willing to learn from every experience. And most importantly, define success on your own terms.”

Congratulations to Ecosphere Organics on the great coverage of their work turning organic waste into high-value raw material. We have been thrilled to have them as a materials partner on the Penny Pickup platform, where we picked up coffee grounds from small businesses and delivered them to Ecosphere for processing into bioplastics. Over the last year, we have been fortunate to collaborate on several projects and look forward to continuing to learn from them! #foodwaste #circulareconomy Brittanie Dabney Kameron D.

That's a wrap! Orange Sparkle Ball is excited to share the results, key learnings, and outcomes from our recent?series of four pilots exploring autonomous robotic pickup for sustainable end-of-life processing. These pilots would not have been possible without the incredible support of a host of folks in our ecosystem: Scrap Soils, Ottonomy, North Corktown Neighborhood Association (NCNA), Intermode, Human-I-T, Ecosphere Organics, Office of Mobility Innovation at The City of Detroit, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, NextEnergy, Newlab, Michigan Central, Brother Nature Produce (https://lnkd.in/g3twstU2) and Recycle Here! (https://lnkd.in/giwwQQQP). Together, we tested autonomous robotic pickup across a diverse range of materials and use cases, including: - Residential food waste collection for composting - Plastic bag collection for recycling - Small electronics retrieval for refurbishment - Commercial food waste collection for bioplastics production Each pilot provided critical insights into the logistics of autonomous collection, participant interest across different material streams, and the potential economic and environmental savings robotic systems can unlock.
