The Austin Youth Climate Equity Council convened at the Austin Energy headquarters for a day of connection, camaraderie, and knowledge-building! We spent the morning connecting as a cohort before breaking into our advocacy groups and researching how our project ideas can create community impact. We shared out what we learned and got feedback from one another to further strengthen our upcoming projects! We also had the opportunity to tour Austin Energy's LEED Platinum building thanks to Equity Development Manager & EcoRise Board Member, Amy Atchley. We got inspired by the intentional features of the building and learned that building certification systems (such as LEED and WELL,) were born from Austin Energy's Green Building rating system! How do you turn a city into a classroom? ??? The New York City Sustainability and Green Design teacher cohort came up with great ideas over the course of this year's program, where we reimagined the city as a living lab for green infrastructure! From exploring sustainable transportation and habitat preservation to tackling stormwater runoff and reducing energy consumption, we brainstormed creative ways to engage students in improving the world around them. Thank you to BNY for supporting these teachers to spark curiosity and action in their students. As cities across the U.S. take the lead on climate resilience, the Austin Youth Climate Equity Council is ensuring youth voice is included in these efforts! Council members hosted a roundtable event with the City of Austin Office of Climate Action & Resilience to understand the climate concerns and priorities of Central Texas youth. Participants were excited and eager to share their climate insights and ideas with the city officials in attendance. We’re proud of the nine Youth Council leaders who facilitated small group discussions and collected notes about reducing emissions, extreme weather preparedness, protecting vulnerable populations, improving public transportation, and much more to submit to the City of Austin Government's new Comprehensive Climate Action Plan. Teacher Ambassador Chris James and Program Manager T Larson had a great day working with Salpointe Catholic High School teachers! We shared a number of resources that make teaching sustainability in any subject easy. They were excited the lessons we shared would create Project-Based Learning opportunities and build on the important work initiated by the Care for Creation Committee, creating lasting impacts on their school. The San Antonio Youth Climate Council February convening was a day packed full of learning, collecting feedback, and evaluating community needs. We tabled at the Garza Community Center for the BeReady San Antonio resilience event. We shared our drafted community impact projects and visitors who stopped by the table left feedback on our ideas, which we used to further develop our initiatives. We also heard from 2 guest speakers: Janell Garcia from the San Antonio Office of Emergency Management, shared how we can prepare in case of emergencies. And Laura Pati?o, Chief Resilience Officer of City of San Antonio, introduced us to what a resilience hub is and how they support the community. We're grateful to everyone who has contributed to our projects so far and can't wait to start implementing them in the community! Thank you to the City of San Antonio Office of Sustainability, Hollomon Price Foundation, and Mayor Ron Nirenberg for supporting our work! The Austin Youth Climate Council joined TreeFolks' Ready, Set, Plant event earlier this month and worked with 100 other volunteers to plant over 1,200 native saplings around Lady Bird Lake! Riparian restoration projects like these improve habitats near water by cooling water for aquatic life, controlling erosion, and filtering pollutants from stormwater. ?? We were lucky to get to hear from TreeFolks as well as The Trail Conservancy and Austin Watershed about how they collaborated to organize the event. Employees from each organization also shared more about what their job entails and their diverse pathways to careers in restoration and protection. Thank you to the City of Austin Office of Sustainability for your continue support of this Council's leadership development!
