Still using air pillows, bubble wrap, or foam peanuts for your packaging? You may soon be obligated to make the switch. These materials are neither recyclable nor biodegradable, destined to clutter up landfills after a single use. But don’t worry—there are better options! Paper-based void fill not only protects your products just as effectively, but it’s also sourced from renewable materials, fully recyclable, and breaks down naturally in compost or the environment. Bonus: It gives your packaging a more polished, eco-friendly appearance. Isn’t it time to make the switch?

What is GRS certification and why is it important? The GRS certification is a voluntary product standard that tracks and verifies the content of recycled materials in a final product. It covers the full supply chain, including processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution. But GRS certification isn't just about using recycled materials – it sets rigorous criteria to reduce waste, promote better working conditions, and minimize environmental impact. It's a powerful way for companies to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and gain the trust of eco-conscious customers. How can you get GRS certified? To earn the GRS certification, companies must meet strict requirements in several key areas: Traceability: Accurately track recycled materials from source to final product. Environmental Principles: Implement practices that reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability. Social Requirements: Uphold fair labor practices and ensure worker safety. Chemical Content: Prohibit the use of hazardous chemicals to protect both the environment and consumers. Labeling: Ensure clear and accurate labeling of recycled content. Who can benefit from GRS? Although owned by Textile Exchange, GRS certification is not limited to textiles – it applies to any product containing at least 20% recycled materials. This includes everything from packaging to consumer goods. The GRS aims to increase the use of recycled materials in products, reduce harm caused by production, encourage innovation with reclaimed materials, and establish transparency in the supply chain. Plus, it provides brands with tools for accurate labeling and better information for consumers. Want to learn more or get certified? We’ve all “learned” about recycling at some point in our lives. So why are we still so bad at it? Too many people over-index on formal education. I learned about recycling in my 4th grade class, long before I had to cut a cardboard box or handle plastic film. Recycling is complex, and most people don't have time to learn it formally. How then should we learn? Through practical education from the products we use daily. Instead of vague symbols like (#4 Recyclable) or Store-Drop Off logos, packaging should clearly state what customers should do. For example, if a product is curbside recyclable (e.g., a box), specify the conditions: “Please remove plastic tape before recycling.” Brands & packaging companies need to lead this effort. It won’t ruin a company’s branding to have clear, understandable recycling instructions on its packaging. It shows customers you actually care.
