The EcoNomics Inc. team had a blast shifting the conversation about zero waste, circularity, and legislative updates at the annual California Resource Recovery Association event last month. A lot of focus on CA’s #SenateBill54, and rightfully so, as this new, fundamental piece of legislation aims to shift the burden of #plasticwaste from the consumers to the producers, and aims for a paradigm shift in the design component of the #circulareconomy. Our own Trevor Blythe and Ashley Brunier presented with the City of Anaheim Ayumi Takayasu, and HFH Consultants’ Haley Kunert for their fantastic presentation “Building the A Team,” showcasing how collaborating with a mix of new and old tools was able to help a city make significant progress in getting thousands of businesses to implement recycling and organics recycling programs. Our biggest shoutout goes to William O'Toole, founder of EcoNomics, for earning Recycler of the Year award! William was one of the original founders of the CRRA itself! A couple weeks ago, Clarisa Gomez, Isabella Sullins, and Tina Nguyen attended the California Green Business Network’s (CAGBN) Coordinator Training! EcoNomics Inc. has been fortunate enough to work with CAGBN in various opportunities, particularly helping Taco Bell Headquarters achieve CAGBN Tier 1 certification last year! We’ve seen first-hand the positive impacts of businesses making internal changes, big and small, in pursuit of this certification, and it truly moves the sustainability needle! We were thoroughly impressed by the cohesive and talented crew behind the CAGBN non-profit and we are excited to see the program expand throughout the state! Sandrine Cassidy and team did an amazing job organizing the event, it was also awesome to see familiar faces Ashlee Baker, TRUE Advisor and her team from Waste Not Consulting, LLC, and so meet so many other new sustainability champions! We love collaborative solutions to implement waste reduction policy from the top down! Well done to our Director of Compliance Implementation Projects Ashley Brunier for presenting at the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) SoCal Western Regional Symposium at the Hilton in Palm Springs on May 21, 2024. Ashley and the City of Anaheim presented a?case study showing how Anaheim is working towards 100% SB 1383 compliance like many other cities in California (diverting organics from landfill). Anaheim had over 15,000 residents without a cart to recycle their green waste and food scraps, many of them never had a need for a green container because they didn’t have any landscaping or if they did, it was hauled away by the landscaper. In addition, the City had over 6,000 commercially serviced businesses and multi-family properties, most of which are unsubscribed to an organics and recycling program. To ensure all customers had an organics and recycling program within the required timeline, the City needed to develop a plan to automatically enroll any customer that 1) needed the program, and 2) who had the space for additional containers. No small feat to plan this complex logistic plan to be as efficient as possible! The City enacted traditional methods such as visual inspections via “ride-a-longs” with the trash truck combined with various GIS methods like an aerial vegetation analysis and geocoded surveying. Ultimately, the City and EcoNomics were able to develop an application that allowed a field team to streamline site visits to hundreds and hundreds of accounts, photographing the physical space available, and recording key details all swiftly on their mobile phones. While compliance is still a work in progress, this huge push gave the City a significant boost to get closer to 100% while helping residents make an impact by diverting their organic waste from the landfill! Trevor went out to Nevada to attend the 50+ year old Waste Expo event at the Las Vegas Convention Center on May 6-9, 2024.
