In closed-door sessions and plenaries, participants at this week's Sustainable Markets Initiative summit discussed and identified opportunities and action items for collaboration. A unique opportunity also for Co-Founder and CEO Ido Sella to contribute ECOncrete's perspective on de-risking investments and scaling ecological solutions within industry supply chains - such as pay-for-success models for blue investments. Thank you to Barclays for extending the invitation and HRM King Charles for initiating, facilitating and hosting this invaluable collaborative work! #SMITERRACARTA

A well-deserved recognition! Thank you to the National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada and the University of Ottawa.
Exciting news! We are thrilled to announce that our paper, "Hydraulic Performance of Low-Crested and Emergent Breakwaters with Ecologically Designed Armour Units", has been selected as an Editor’s Choice in the Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering! This recognition underscores the innovative work we're doing to combine engineering excellence with ecological sustainability. By designing breakwaters that not only protect our coastlines, but also enhance marine biodiversity, we are paving the way for more harmonious interactions with our natural environment. A huge thank you to our incredible team and partners at ECOncrete and the University of Ottawa for their dedication and collaboration. Join Yaeli Rosenberg next week at the Oceantic Network webinar!
Can offshore wind infrastructure enhance marine biodiversity? On March 20, I’ll be sharing preliminary findings from our research on ecological scour protection as part of Oceantic Network Research + Innovations Webinar series. This study, supported by NYSERDA and conducted in collaboration with Stony Brook University, evaluates how nature-inclusive scour protection can improve habitat potential and biodiversity. Eighteen months into the study, the data is clear: our NID scour protection system supports richer marine life, providing habitat for local species while improving the ecological function of the structure itself. The findings point to a shift in how offshore infrastructure can be designed- not just to minimize harm but to actively regenerate marine ecosystems. Join the discussion to explore the intersection of offshore wind, fisheries, and biodiversity- and to see how research-backed solutions are shaping the future of marine infrastructure. ?? “…I was able to catch the vibe of a beautiful school and campus and participate in data collection and analysis processes. This involved various excursions and labs, going on boats to otter trawl, collecting zooplankton, snorkeling at various reefs, looking at crosscuts of different alga types, and pressing algae to be preserved for later study. …I hope this opportunity will be offered to other Harbor students... After this amazing camp, I put Roger Williams on my college list and was accepted with a large scholarship.” - Horatio Mottola, 2024 scholarship recipient Today marks four years since Shimrit Perkol-Finkel’s untimely passing. In memory of ECOncrete’s co-founder, we set up a scholarship for students from the New York Harbor School to attend a summer camp experience in marine science at Roger Williams University. Below, Horatio and Sebastian, two of the recipients of last year’s scholarship at a workshop; and Shimrit working in the lab with a NYHS student, taken 13 years ago.

Dr. Yaeli Rosenberg, Head of Biology at ECOncrete, will present 'OSW Fisheries + Biodiversity Research: Scientific Evaluation of Ecological Scour Protection' on Oceantic Network's webinar series. Preliminary results 18 months post-deployment reveal that the NID scour protection system enhances habitat potential for local species, and improves the ecological function of the structure and its surroundings, resulting in increased overall biodiversity compared to control sites. Coastalock delivered by local pre-casting partner to Port of Prince Rupert, Canada, awaiting installation.
Integrating Fish Habitat into Port Infrastructure: Right now, they are just holding blocks of ice.?Soon, they will be integrated into the shoreline protection (riprap) of a new Material Offloading Facility at the Port of #PrinceRupert.?As part of a pilot to evaluate innovative methods to create productive fish habitat, these specially formulated precast #ECOncrete blocks are designed to enhance marine biological communities and create intertidal pools to support habitat diversity within built infrastructure. ??I’ll be providing updates over the coming weeks and months on placement of the features and through the monitoring results for this exciting pilot program!

Biodiversity results are in: biological monitoring almost 2 years after installation shows that ECOncrete cable protection promotes a healthy and stable ecosystem. The eco-engineering challenge for this project required securing the interconnector cable in a rock reef trench and restoring reef habitats to promote marine biodiversity.
