?? ???????????????????????? ???? ?????????????????????? ?????????????????? ???? ???????????? ?????????? ???????????????????? University of Southern California researchers have developed the first successful method to fully recycle Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP), a widely used composite material in vehicles, airplanes, and wind turbines. This new process reclaims valuable carbon fibers and upcycles the polymer matrix—offering a sustainable solution to a significant environmental challenge in transportation and energy sectors. Traditionally, CFRPs are nearly impossible to recycle without burning off valuable polymer, making the material challenging to reuse. By contrast, this method preserves over 97% of the carbon fiber’s strength, allowing it to be repurposed for new manufacturing uses. Projections suggest that by 2050, CFRP waste from retired vehicles and turbines could reach hundreds of thousands of tons, underscoring the urgency for sustainable solutions like this one. A key innovation in this method is the use of a special fungus, Aspergillus nidulans, which breaks down the polymer into useful compounds. This process not only upcycles waste materials but could also lead to applications in medicine, such as antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. “This breakthrough comes at a crucial time as demand for CFRPs rises,” said USC professor Travis Williams. “Our method offers a promising solution for recycling composite waste in a sustainable way.” https://lnkd.in/gufhr9jP

We are so happy to have been there with you. We can't wait to continue to share our innovative ideas with the sustainable community!
As expected, last week's Greenbuild conference left me with a lot to digest. I so rarely seem to have time to gather and articulate my thoughts after an event such as this, and have such appreciation for those who do. Kudos to Jodi Smits Anderson, FAIA, who shared some of her key takeaways in her recent blog post, "Language to Power Our Journey": https://lnkd.in/etuF9Erv ?? credit to Jodi, and a big thank you to our esteemed panelists: Paul Shahriari, Rebecca Elie Best, Stacy Smedley, and Barbra BatShalom

???????????????? ?? ?????????????????????? ???????????? ???????? ???????????????? ?????????? ???????????? Imagine if buildings could be constructed and deconstructed as easily as LEGO bricks, allowing materials to be reused in a sustainable cycle. This is the idea behind circular construction—reducing waste by reusing building materials and minimizing the “embodied carbon” footprint of construction. A team of Massachusetts Institute of Technology engineers is now making this vision a reality with reconfigurable masonry crafted from 3D-printed, recycled glass. Using technology from MIT spinoff Evenline, the team has created durable, interlocking glass bricks that can be disassembled and repurposed for new structures. These figure-eight-shaped bricks, inspired by LEGO, stack securely and can be reshaped as needed, providing an innovative, recyclable alternative to traditional materials. Glass, unlike most building materials, is highly recyclable, retaining quality even after multiple cycles. “We’re taking glass and turning it into masonry that can be reassembled or re-melted into new forms,” says MIT’s Kaitlyn Becker. Testing has shown that these glass bricks can withstand pressures similar to concrete blocks, making them suitable for real-world construction. As the MIT team scales up their design, they envision these glass bricks used in modular structures that can be rearranged or rebuilt as needs change, demonstrating a model of sustainable construction that could serve generations. This approach not only redefines sustainable building but also provides a path to significantly reduce the environmental impact of construction. https://lnkd.in/dauzthpW
