Public Benefit Corporations vs B Corp Certification: What’s the Difference? If you’re an impact-driven business or curious about what it means to be one, you’ve likely come across the terms B Corp Certification and Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). But what do they really mean for your company? ?? PBC = Public Benefit Corporation is a legal status that companies can adopt to formalize their commitment to balancing profit with broader social and environmental goals. Becoming a PBC involves amending a company’s incorporation documents to embed this commitment into its fundamental legal structure. ?? B Corp = B Corp Certification is a third-party certification granted by the nonprofit organization B Lab. Unlike PBC status, which focuses on legal structure, the B Corp Certification evaluates a company’s actual performance in areas such as social impact, environmental practices, and governance. ImpactGC, PLLC co-founders, Jim Black and Julie Goldman Ryan, and Ecolytics teamed up to break down the key differences and overlaps to help businesses navigate these two models. ??
