Public Benefit Corporations vs B Corp Certification: What’s the Difference? If you’re an impact-driven business or curious about what it means to be one, you’ve likely come across the terms B Corp Certification and Public Benefit Corporation (PBC). But what do they really mean for your company? ?? PBC = Public Benefit Corporation is a legal status that companies can adopt to formalize their commitment to balancing profit with broader social and environmental goals. Becoming a PBC involves amending a company’s incorporation documents to embed this commitment into its fundamental legal structure. ?? B Corp = B Corp Certification is a third-party certification granted by the nonprofit organization B Lab. Unlike PBC status, which focuses on legal structure, the B Corp Certification evaluates a company’s actual performance in areas such as social impact, environmental practices, and governance. ImpactGC, PLLC co-founders, Jim Black and Julie Goldman Ryan, and Ecolytics teamed up to break down the key differences and overlaps to help businesses navigate these two models. ?? Our Founder and CEO, Hazel Horvath, was also selected for Forbes 30 Under 30 list, and Ecolytics was selected for a case study for B Lab’s annual brand awareness report. Hazel Horvath also spoke at leading events like BLD Southeast, DC Startup & Tech Week (Formerly DC Startup Week), and Duke University’s Energy Week, sharing insights on the power of tracking and showcasing environmental and social impact.
