Following the negotiations closely in Cali was a privilege I rarely get. It was an intense, two-week sprint, and now that the jet lag has worn off and the last delegates have left, I was able to reflect on successes, but also on some tough setbacks. Major wins: - Cali Fund for benefit-sharing. A transformative step where large companies must share profits from digital genetic information (DSI) with developing countries and Indigenous communities. Half of the fund is earmarked for Indigenous and Local Communities, directly addressing “biopiracy” and ensuring equitable benefit-sharing. - Permanent role for Indigenous Voices. #COP16 established a new body to embed Indigenous perspectives in biodiversity policy, recognizing them as vital stewards of nature. - Integrated Food Systems and Marine Conservation. For the first time, agroecology, sustainable agriculture, and marine protection were addressed collectively, emphasizing biodiversity's role in food security and climate resilience. Remaining challenges: - Funding gaps. Wealthier nations blocked a dedicated biodiversity fund, leaving developing countries without full support to implement the #KMGBF. The $200B annual target by 2030 feels out of reach. - Action on harmful subsidies. Limited progress was made in redirecting $500B in subsidies that harm biodiversity—key for aligning financial flows with conservation. - Slow progress on #NBSAPs and monitoring frameworks. Only a small percentage of countries have updated biodiversity plans, delaying the 2030 targets. Gaps in tracking commitments further hinder accountability. Achieving a true paz con la naturaleza requires sustained political will, enforceable commitments, and (continuous) global collaboration. A fascinating day at #COP16 in Calí Colombia for the #UN Convention on #Biodiversity #CBD. I am here with the Ecological Socety of America #ESA Delegation and #Harvard University’s #Salata Institute. We have been learning about harnessing global genomic initiatives and managing Digital Sequence Information across sectors; efforts by the private sector to reduce risks to nature; finding a common language between economics and ecology; meeting up with old and new friends; and enjoying art, dance, food and culture from our wonderful Colombian hosts.
