Last month, the Forum for Naturals Sustainability Group had the wonderful opportunity to gather in person in Boulder for a hike and a tour at Eco-Cycle just before our Summit at EcoEnclose! Those two days were filled with connection, collaboration, and inspiration. Stepping outside and working together in person is always one of our favorite experiences. Consumers Will Spread Out Their Holiday Spending Through the Season (as they did with back to school shopping). Spread out your discounts, promos and marketing across the season - from September through December. ?? Consumers Will Seek Discounts and Low Cost Marketplaces. Launch discounts throughout the season, particularly during BFCM. But recognize that competing on cost is not feasible for most eco oriented brands. Emphasize your unique brand values, as well as your commitment to quality and durability. ?? Consumers Are Taking On More Debt. Get your “Buy Now, Pay Later” option at checkout launched before the season is in full swing. ?? Generative AI and ChatGPT Will Drive Search and Decision Making In a Major Way. Optimize your online presence, copy, and photos for AI engine searchability. Consider interactive AI tools like virtual try-ons or chat bots. ?? Overall Spending Is Likely to Be Relatively Flat. ?Projections are conflicting, but most sources expect similar or slightly reduced overall holiday spending compared to last year. Consider forecasting conservatively. ??Election Season Will Impact Spend and Capture Consumer Attention. People are feeling uncertain, and may delay shopping until after the election. Election-related messages will also crowd out your marketing campaigns so get creative with marketing. ??Sustainability Will Continue to Gain Importance for a Segment of the Market. Make sure your brand's sustainability messaging is clear, engaging, and easy to find. ??Eco and Marketing Claims Must Be Clear and Accurate. Consumers are increasingly wary of greenwashing, and?regulations aimed to prevent greenwashing are becoming increasingly strict. ??Middle and Last Mile Shipping Challenges May Arise. Order supplies early to give yourself a cushion. Consider express shipping late in the season, mitigated by a vetted carbon offsetting program where possible. ??Social Media Will Continue Drive A Lot of Product Discovery and Purchase. Generative AI may cause some consumers to lean even more on social media this year. Continue investing in engaging, visually appealing content and build thoughtful partnerships with influencers. Ensure your shop integrates with social platforms.

    CEO and Chief Sustainability Geek | EcoEnclose | Sustainable Packaging and Guidance for Brands Committed to Positive Change

    Suffocation Warnings: what #packaging needs them? what locations require them? what does it need to say? what language does it need to be in? why do they exist? We receive a lot of questions from brands on this topic! And we understand why. As with all #packagingrequirements, its a confusing landscape. For example, the states and municipalities that have legislation in place generally have requirements for bags that are 1 mil or thinner. On the other hand, #Amazon #FBA requires brands to use poly bags that are at least 1.5 mil thick *and* requires that all clear poly bags contain a suffocation warning. Warnings are generally not required on packaging with openings under 5" or on poly mailers (and other poly packaging solutions that tend to be 2.5 mil or thicker). While there is no set warning language that all entities accept or require, there are specific components that need to be included in the copy (such as a "warning" statement, a risk statement, etc). On top of this, the brands we work with have a lot more to think about than just suffocation warning requirements. They are trying to: ?? Use the most #circular poly packaging possible (with high #postconsumerwaste and thin film #recyclability, or made with restorative #biobased alternative inputs) ?? Need to hit their aesthetic and unit price requirements ?? Adhere to emerging truth in labeling legislation, such as SBS 343 The latest EcoEnclose resource gives you (1) a quick summary of what you need to know about suffocation warnings, and (2) details behind that summary - for anyone who wants to dig in deeper. We work with many brands who are trying to move away from the virgin poly bag, which is often necessary to protect products throughout the supply chain - from factory to distribution center to retailers to end consumers. We have helped quite a few brands move from Poly Bags to Paper Alternatives (such as Vela Bags and Recycled Kraft Bags).
