??Consequences of the increase in Fishery side-streams ??The recent increase in fish production may have a negative impact on both the environment and the economy, due to the significant increase in collateral fishery side-streams worldwide. Some of the statistics provided by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) are particularly interesting: ??Around 30% of fisheries and aquaculture products are lost or wasted every year: the fishing industry produces an increasing amount of side streams, represented by by-products and co-products of industrial processes that are still little or not at all exploited; ??Around 70% of fish, on the other hand, undergoes further processing, resulting in large amounts of waste depending on the level of processing. ?? Increased fishery side-streams also results in ‘unwanted catches’ or ‘by-catches’. They include undersized and overfished fish and endangered or protected marine species. These catches deeply compromise the marine ecosystem and its wellbeing. ? #ecoefishent #sustainability #circulareconomy #seafood #fishproduction #fisherysidestreams Università degli Studi di Genova TICASS | Polo EASS

We are committed to valuing the people who are part of it and the work they do, leaving no room for any kind of discrimination. ?? The 11th of February was chosen as the date to celebrate gender equality in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines, which has always been a central theme for the United Nations. Specifically, the 5th Sustainable Development Goal of the 2030 Agenda, aims to achieve??gender equality and to ensure self-determination for all women and girls. ????“?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????”:?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? Abandoned fishing nets, hooks, and lines don’t just pollute the ocean, they threaten marine life and local economies, yet they are often overlooked. That’s why, to tackle this issue head-on, Il Secolo XIX has featured our project’s efforts on their newspaper. The article highlights how our initiative removes ghost gear from the seabed, recycles it into new materials, and supports local fishermen by turning marine waste into an economic resource. With the Portofino Protected Area, in close collaboration with WWF Italia e #reefalertnetwork ?we’re making sustainability a reality—one recovered net at a time. Specifically, #AMP Portofino is creating a training course for recreational fishermen who are authorized to fish in the protected marine area. The course will cover both fishing techniques and environmental conservation practices. The goal is to raise awareness, encouraging more sustainable fishing and helping to reduce the impact on the seabed, so we can protect the ecosystem for years to come. From waste to opportunity, from pollution to protection. This recognition from such an important local publication reinforces how conservation and job creation can go hand in hand. #EcoeFISHent

?? National Day Against Food Waste ?? In Italy on 5 February is celebrated the National Day against food waste, that reminds us how important it is to reduce food waste: the increasing amounts of wasted food have a major negative environmental, economic and social impact. It is estimated that around 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are associated with food that is not consumed. The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, has set goal to reduce global per capita food waste in retail and consumer spending by 2030. In addition, countries were asked to reduce food losses along the production and supply chains. ??With the hope of reaching this goal, each of us can contribute with a small gesture everyday, to ensure that less and less food is wasted. ?? Discovering plastic pollution Effects ?? Globally, around 2.150 marine species are impacted by plastic causing both direct physical effects (e.g. entanglement, injures, suffocation and lack of adequate nutrition) and indirect chemical effects (e.g.?chemical intoxication). ??In particular, the chemical intoxication, due to toxic additives, can cause serious reproductive, neuronal and metabolic damage, resulting in impaired reproductive development and alarming behaviours.
