Who doesn’t love an icy vernal pool? Don’t know what a vernal pool is? They’re seasonally inundated wooded wetlands that fill with snow melt and early spring rains. They are critical habitat for breeding amphibians like salamanders and frogs, and overwintering spots for turtles and macroinvertebrates. If you’ve ever paused at the sound of spring peepers calling, or found yourself gazing into these shallow waters to watch fairy shrimp or other arthropod curiosities, then you my friend, also love vernal pools. Soon, this wintry scene will be thawed and screaming with life. By midsummer, they’ll go quiet and be nearly dry. It’s all part of the vernal pool magic ? #madscientistassociates #makingadifference #wetlands #vernalpool #amphibians #naturemagic

We’re excited to sponsor the Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions (MACC) Annual Environmental Conference again on Saturday! Grab one of Ecobot’s soil guides at the registration table, and don’t miss this year’s educational workshops. It was hard to choose favorites, but here are a few we have our eyes on: 1?? Identifying Woody Wetland Plants in Winter (9:45am-12:30pm): This two-session workshop will focus on the most frequently encountered trees, shrubs, and vines of swamps, bogs, marshes, and other freshwater wetlands in Massachusetts. The classroom set-up will include live winter specimens, which, along with additional photos and field guides, will help attendees recognize common freshwater wetland plants in the field using the most prominent features of each plant. 2?? Digging Deeper: Soils Classification and Textures (9:45-11am): Make sure to grab a soil guide on your way into this one! Designed for wetlands scientists and related practitioners, as well as regulators and conservation commission members, this hands-on workshop will provide an overview of major soil classification topics and “real-feel” practice for determining soil textures. 3?? Wetlands Restoration: Aligning Progress with Goals and Urgency (2:15-3:15pm): The Commonwealth has ambitious goals for coastal and inland restoration, in support of goals for climate mitigation and resiliency, biodiversity, and Environmental Justice (EJ). This workshop will share examples of successes and challenges in restoration and upcoming opportunities for conservation commissions to learn more and advance restoration in their communities. Will you be attending? Tell us which sessions you're excited for! See the full agenda here: https://lnkd.in/eJAW5tYq
