?????COP29 & Green Digital Action: Measuring the Digital Impact on Climate Action As?COP29 Azerbaijan?in Baku concludes, one of the key emerging themes was the growing focus on the?role of #digitalization and #AI?in addressing climate change. The?COP29 Declaration on Green Digital Action, initiated by the?International Technological University (ITU) and?adopted by a coalition of governments, businesses, and civil society organizations, highlights the urgent need to align digital transformation with climate goals. The declaration emphasizes the potential of digitalization to play a transformative role in combating climate change while also addressing the?environmental footprint?of the tech sector itself. Key objectives include: ???Objective 3: Developing policies and technologies to reduce emissions and resource consumption in digital technologies, including: - Powering digital infrastructure with?clean energy. - Promoting?energy-efficient practices?and extending product lifecycles. - Improving recycling and e-waste management. ???Objective 5: Advancing?data-driven decision-making?by: - Creating methodologies to estimate the?net climate impact?of digital solutions. - Standardizing systems to track energy use, emissions, and regulatory compliance. A key challenge remains: how do we reliably measure the environmental impact of digital technologies themselves? This is where?ECO:DIGIT?comes in. Our project lays the groundwork for assessing the?CO2e emissions?and?resource consumption?of software, providing the transparency needed to understand and address the climate impact of digital solutions. Together, let’s make digital sustainability measurable and empower technology to become a driving force for positive climate action!??? #COP29 #GreenDigitalAction #ClimateAction #DigitalSustainability #ECODIGIT

English version is now available! ???? The English version of our?"Methodology for Determining the Environmental Impacts of Digital Services"?is now available for download! This method links the use of digital resources (compute, store, transfer) by software to its environmental footprint, covering both hardware production and operation. With this methodology, we hope to create a foundation for ongoing discussions and collaboration around the environmental impact of digital services. We've also included a?Spreadsheet Calculation?with example formulas and code templates (Python, PHP, Javascript) for easy integration. ???? Feel free to take a look—we’d love to hear your feedback: https://lnkd.in/eS_n5Xx8 Authors: Jens Gr?ger / Felix Behrens / Ran Liu / Dirk Bunke #Sustainability #DigitalServices #LCA #GreenTech

Our methodology draft is here!??? We are excited to announce that the official version of our methodology paper has now been published by the ?ko-Institut e.V. and is available for download on our website!??? The "Methodology for Determining the Environmental Impacts of Digital Services" captures the environmental costs associated with the production and operation of hardware. It establishes the connection between the use of digital basic resources (compute, memorize, store, transfer) by a software application and the resulting environmental impacts. Therefore, it forms the foundation for the development of a test bench, enabling software to be tested on different virtualized hardware platforms and their environmental footprints to be assessed. ???Curious to learn more? Download it here: https://lnkd.in/e9arbcxb Authors: Jens Gr?ger | Felix Behrens | Ran Liu | Dirk Bunke The English version of the methodology will be available soon. #GreenIT #ECODIGIT #Sustainability #Software #DigitalTransformation #EnvironmentalImpact #ResourceConsumption

Two weeks ago #INFORMATIK2024, the annual conference of the Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V., brought together cutting-edge research across the informatics spectrum.?The theme of this year’s event was “Lock-in or log out? How to achieve digital sovereignty.” During the panel ‘Data Centres as Infrastructure for Technological Sovereignty’, Dr. Manuela Urban, COO Sovereign Cloud Stack (SCS), a successful project led by OSB Alliance (Open Source Business Alliance - Bundesverband für digitale Souver?nit?t e.V.), explained how ECO:DIGIT helps to create transparency about the (energy) consumption of cloud applications and thus plays a key role in promoting digital sovereignty.???? ???We also had many insightful discussions at our ECO:DIGIT booth and were happy to receive a great deal of interest in our project. A big thank you to the event team at the GI for the excellent organization, and to the many speakers and participants for their valuable input. ???Link to the event recordings:?https://lnkd.in/giRyJaRi ? ?Photo credits: Mike Auerbach #INFORMATIK2024 #DigitalSovereignty #Conference #Digitalization

"Digital technologies already account for around 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions—more than the entire aviation industry."?? Our joint project?ECO:DIGIT (Enabling Green Computing and DIGItal Transformation), funded by the?Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz, aims to develop a methodology and a "test bench" to make the resource and energy consumption of software transparent. Why is this important? Software often contributes invisibly to CO2e emissions and water consumption, as it influences both hardware requirements and the energy consumption and lifespan of devices. ECO:DIGIT offers a platform-independent evaluation method for everything from mobile apps to cloud-native systems, thereby promoting informed decisions for a more environmentally friendly IT future.?? ???Stay informed: https://ecodigit.de/ adesso SE, OSB Alliance (Open Source Business Alliance - Bundesverband für digitale Souver?nit?t e.V.), Siemens, Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V., ?ko-Institut e.V. #GreenIT #Sustainability #DigitalTransformation #ECODIGIT
