Since its founding in 1893 by two legends, George Westinghouse and Reginald Fessenden, the ECE Department at Pitt has excelled in education, research, and service. Today, the department features innovative undergrad and graduate programs and world-class research centers and labs, combining theory with practice at the nexus of computer and electrical engineering, for our students to learn, develop, and lead lives of impact.

Great work by our RAS students!
Yesterday, we had the opportunity to showcase some of our projects, including a robotic arm, battle bots, and the rover project, at the Pittsburgh Robotics Network Discovery Day 2024. It was an enjoyable experience where we connected with various robotics companies. We also demonstrated the robotic arm, which uses computer vision to track and mimic hand movements - a feature that drew significant interest from those who stopped by the table.

I’m delighted that our paper on ultra-high endurance, non-reciprocal memory was published in Nature Photonics! It is quite rare for a single technology to solve so many major challenges simultaneously, but that was precisely what we observed: sub-pJ programming energies, nanosecond programming speeds, multi-level operation, symmetric weight encoding, and programming voltages compatible with the most advanced CMOS nodes. Additionally, by leveraging the same materials used in hard drives, we were also able to achieve billions of non-volatile write and erase cycles without any device degradation! We recently collaborated with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission and University of Pittsburgh (University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering) to hold a “Careers in Energy” Panel, moderated by Commissioner Katie Zerfuss. ? The panel featured insights into the multitude of career paths in the energy and utility industry along with emerging technologies and trends for career readiness. ? Commissioner Zerfuss also toured the Energy Innovation Center, highlighting the partnership between University of Pittsburgh and DLC in understanding new technologies and modernizing the grid for the future. ? The high voltage power electronics team at Pitt recently received notification of an award to design the next generation HVDC converter. The "small" prototype will be built to operate at 13.8kVac and rectify the voltage to 25kVdc to prove out attempts to minimize arm inductance using AI-based control routines. This unit will be tested in our high voltage labs at the Energy Innovation Center in downtown Pittsburgh when we get there.
