  • This photo is a throwback to 2006, but CSU's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering emerged as a leader in laser innovation long before that. Over the next several days, we’ll share examples of how we’re creating a bright future using sophisticated laser technologies. Led by University Distinguished Professors Carmen Menoni (third from left) and Jorge Rocca (far left), here are some of our biggest laser milestones since the ‘90s: ?? Mid-1990s: Demonstrated world’s first table-top soft x-ray laser and applied it to several fields ?? 2000s to present: Created novel optical coatings for high-power lasers and interferometers ?? 2003-2013: Led decade-long National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Science and Technology ?? 2017: Developed Advanced Laser for Extreme Photonics, called ALEPH, one of the most powerful ultrashort pulse lasers in the world ?? 2018 to present: Joined LaserNetUS, a DOE-funded network of the most powerful lasers in North America ?? 2023: Announced public-private partnership with Marvel Fusion to build new $150 million laser facility ?? 2024: Named lead institution of DOE-funded RISE hub to advance inertial fusion energy #lasers #innovation #technology

  • A big THANK YOU to our alumni and donors who helped us establish the Aram and Helga Budak ECE Professorship! ?? ?? The professorship honors the legacy of former electrical engineering professor Aram Budak and his wife, Helga. Garnering more than $375,000 in donations, the endowed fund becomes the second named professorship in the ECE department. ? ECE Professor Sudeep Pasricha has been named the inaugural recipient of the professorship. “Our goal was to choose a professor who embodies Budak’s commitment to teaching and passion for our discipline,” said Edwin Chong, ECE department head. “Each year, I read students’ course evaluations, and the feedback for Sudeep is consistently and overwhelmingly positive.” ?? CSU will construct an innovative new academic building that will transform engineering education for generations to come, thanks to two landmark philanthropic gifts and a strategic investment from CSU students. The Don and Susie Law Engineering Future Technologies Building will be an interdisciplinary learning hub situated in the heart of CSU’s campus on the site of the existing Glover Building (east of the Lory Student Center), with classrooms, laboratories and other innovation spaces that focus on the ways digital technology and artificial intelligence will shape and transform engineering and related fields. The ambitious vision for the Don and Susie Law Engineering Future Technologies Building was spurred by a $10 million gift in 2020 from the Laws, two alumni who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to strengthening the undergraduate and graduate engineering experience at CSU. The new building will become a reality thanks to a $50 million commitment of existing fees from students and – inspired by the student investment – a $50 million matching gift from the Walter Scott Family Foundation. “The Law Building will be a transformational addition to the CSU campus. It will place our engineering programs among the very best in the country. Don and Susie saw the need for just such a building at CSU years ago, and we would not be moving forward with this project without their tremendous vision. Our stalwart supporters at the Scott Family Foundation have always believed in CSU and, more importantly, believed in our students. And our students made an impressive commitment not for themselves, but to ensure that future Rams benefit from a state-of-the-art learning environment,” said CSU President Amy Parsons. “Our goal in this new building is to help equip all CSU students – not just engineers – to be innovators and leaders in areas like smart infrastructure, climate and weather prediction, and environmental sustainability – all of which will become increasingly dependent on AI technologies in the future,” said Allen Robinson, dean of the CSU Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. • ?? ECE had a big showing at last night's Frontiers in Optics Awards Ceremony hosted by Optica! Join us in congratulating ECE alum Abbie Watnik (left) and University Distinguished Professor Carmen S. Menoni, who were honored for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the field of optics. ?? Dr. Watnik was named a Fellow of Optica "for technical leadership at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in imaging through turbulence and scattering media, and for outstanding service to Optica." Watnik earned her bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Colorado State in 2006. While at CSU, she worked closely with Prof. Menoni. Watnik currently serves as the Optical Physics Branch Head at NRL. ?? Prof. Menoni was awarded the Fraunhofer/Burley Prize "for seminal contributions to the materials aspects and engineering of amorphous oxides for optical coatings of high intensity lasers and gravitational wave detectors." As the director of the recently established Inertial Fusion Energy hub, known as RISE, Menoni is developing novel optical coatings to propel laser-driven fusion energy, a potentially inexhaustible source of clean energy. ??
