I’ve been out at community events over the weekend and Bill 20 came up quite often. Unsurprisingly, there was no support for this legislation as it undermines local democracy. The feedback I heard aligns with the provincial government’s own survey that showed the vast majority of Albertans don’t want political parties, they don’t want corporate and union donations in municipal elections, and they don’t want to give the provincial government the ability to remove a candidate just because they don’t share the same values. We are being told this is meant to increase transparency and yet it does the exact opposite. We are being told this is to increase accountability yet it removes all accountability for the province to use their authority in extreme cases to remove an elected official. We are ‘piloting’ a complete overhaul of local democracy in Calgary and Edmonton even though the vast majority Albertans haven’t asked for this and they have clearly ignored real solutions that would have helped address transparency and accountability. We’ve heard the Minister say “there’s no evidence” when being asked why specific changes are being made. How does that inspire confidence in the decisions that are being made when you are willing to make a change based on absolutely nothing. This legislation should be thrown in the trash where it belongs. Then the provincial government should start fresh and actually work with Albertans to come up with changes to our local democracy that increase transparency and make our elections more fair. #Edmonton #yeg #Alberta #yegcc #localdemocracy https://lnkd.in/gPPqfJ38

The party that likes to say they are champions of democracy have gone out of their way to dismantle local democracy through Bill 20. Almost everything that Albertans have said over the years has been ignored. Corporate and Union donations are back even though no one asked for this. Political parties are being introduced in Calgary and Edmonton “as a pilot” even though Albertans have rejected this idea over and over again. The picture is from the province’s own survey results. If this was about transparency, there should be requirements to disclose who has donated to a candidate or third party advertiser in an election year before election day but that isn’t happening so this isn’t actually improving transparency. What about the ability to for Cabinet to remove a councillor if ‘in the public interest’? Will this be abused or used to intimidate elected representatives from speaking up? How is that democratic? Think about these rules from the lens of ‘what if my party of choice wasn’t in power?’ Would you be comfortable with the provincial party you don’t support having significantly more control over our local democracy? This is an assault on local democracy. Albertans have been offering reasonable solutions and instead of incorporating any of those ideas, which would actually improve transparency, we have legislation that is going out of its way to exert total dominance over municipalities. At this point, why bother with local elections? Why not just insert the people you want into each municipality across Alberta? It would save us all time and at least the provincial government and Premier wouldn’t have to pretend that they care about local democracy.
