George Inness Oil Painting??"Sunlight and Shadow (Midsummer)," 1860 EBTH is honored to offer this painting by one of the most influential American artists of the nineteenth century.?George Inness was influenced by the Hudson River School while maintaining a transitional style that exemplified neither Realism or Impressionism, but rather his own form of transitional expression.?Known for his mastery of light while blending detail with unfocused elements, Inness was intent on evoking a feeling of order combined with the spirituality of nature. ? Michael Quick writes of the present work,?“I consider Sunlight and Shadow to be a fully characteristic work of Inness’s of the period around 1860… In fact, it is a particularly large (36" W x 26" H) and finished example of a very interesting stylistic phase, in which Inness concentrated on reproducing the effects of sunlight, particularly on foliage.” ? Literature:?Michael Quick, George Inness: A Catalogue Raisonné, Volume I, page 196, figure 157. ? This exceptional painting is accompanied by a letter from Michael Quick describing the work, provenance, and Michael’s indication to include this example in his catalog of Inness’s works.?A treatment report regarding the painting’s professional restorative efforts is also included from Carmichael Art Conservation. ? The bidding will close on Sunday, September 29th @ 8:00pm ET. Please visit?www.ebth.com?for the complete Landmark sale catalog. https://lnkd.in/g8ke8cbV

We're excited to share a rare and historic item that recently graced our platform: a bill of sale for a 17th-century whaling ship, named Essex. This ship was built in Amesbury, MA, the same port as the infamous Essex that inspired the book "Moby-Dick." The original Essex was tragically sunk by a whale in 1820, the same year our document's ship was constructed. Such unique pieces showcase the incredible history and stories you can find at EBTH.
