This Veteran's Day we'd like to take a moment to honor cornea donor, Chief Warrant Officer Five, Julian Evans, whose selfless character, both as a military serviceman and cornea donor, continues to heal the lives of those around him. Julian was known and respected by his colleagues as a selfless leader who always placed the needs of his family, soldiers, leadership, and fellow Warrant Officers before himself. It feels apropos that his donation mirrors his courage in helping those in need during his military tenure, and that his legacy of service continues even now. His wife, U.S. Army Veteran, Josie Evans, tells the story of how they met and their shared commitment to helping their fellow Americans both in life and in death. Much in the same way the American Military is part of the global effort to maintain peace and prosperity for all, we are humbled to be part of the global effort to restore sight. Today we're spotlighting, "Donor Heroes Are Superheroes," a children's activity book that introduces little ones who have lost donor loved ones to the world of organ, eye, and tissue donation. Author and Donor Mom, Trina Long, noticed a lack of resources for children on this topic at her local library. Her son, Logan (the star of this book), was a cornea recipient at age 16, and later became an organ donor after a tragic car accident at the age of 30. Logan's selfless gift restored the sight to a 21-year-old in Florida and touched the lives of 542 people through tissue donation. Trina's motivation stems from her son and her desire for her community to become more informed about organ, eye, and tissue donation and, ideally, to encourage more people to register as donors.
