During his signal monitor training at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute, Field Applications Engineer Ben McCawley admired their old electromechanical traffic cabinet. Used in the 1940s and 50s, this was the first machine to control an intersection. Much like the ticking, rotating yard sprinklers, the electromechanical cabinet used a camshaft to pre-time a 3-phase intersection. Each of the 3 phases are displayed as the black and white pucks in the cabinet: North/South movement, East/West movement, and either a left turn or pedestrian signal. Electromechanical cabinets did not contain a monitor, so they could not detect faults. If both North/South and East/West movement had the green light, or a timing error occurred, the intersection remained faulty, or even shut down completely, until a technician was alerted to the issue and came to service the cabinet. Years later, the invention of the first monitor with Boolean logic allowed technicians to program it to detect the 3 most common faults still present today: loss of power to the cabinet (Power), controller voltage issues (CVM), and conflicting signals (Conflict). When detected, the monitor enacted the same safety measure we use today—turning all signals to flashing red, preventing collisions while allowing traffic flow until a technician can service the cabinet. As transportation needs and technology have grown over the last 75 years, today’s traffic cabinets look quite a bit different!
