NEW CAVES DISCOVERED ON THE MOON Proud to share that my student interns Daniel Sikes and Jesus Luna are reporting today, at the 56th Lunar & Planetary Science Conference #LPSC2025 in Houston (The Woodlands), TX, the discovery of new pits / caves on the Moon inside two high southern latitude impact craters on the lunar nearside, Rutherfurd (https://t.ly/ajE1-) and Zucchius (https://t.ly/7acoR), respectively. Daniel is a senior in Physical Geography at The University of Kansas and recent intern in the Mars Institute Global Research Internship Program (MI-GRIP) who just got accepted into the PhD program at Rice University in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences. Jesus is a second-year student in Air Maintenance Technology / Mechanical Engineering at Mt. San Antonio College and recent intern in the National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) internship program at the SETI Institute. Our lunar delivery initiative is high risk–with the potential for high reward. Shortly after landing in a crater near the lunar South Pole, Intuitive Machines’ Athena lander collected data and called an early end of mission at 1:15 a.m. EST (0615 UTC) March 7. https://lnkd.in/ebbdedaJ

After a few admittedly tense moments...we can now confirm we were operational after landing sending data and commands! Success!!!

We heard this morning from Intuitive Machines that the Athena lunar lander was out of power and they were formally ending the mission. They worked like heroes after landing, but what the public did not see was the crisp professionalism of IM throughout the whole mission. We have now gone to the Moon twice with IM - our software defined payload, Independence, on IM-1’s Odysseus and now our full data center payload, Freedom, on IM-2’s Athena. We can now reveal some of our exceptional customers!? We successfully ran knowledge graphs for the amazing Valkyrie . None other than Vint Cerf and Oscar Garcia tested a delay tolerant network. (More to come on this soon!) The Exploration Institute’s Active Vigilance fault predicative software executed smoothly.? Foreshadowing the next phase of Lonestar multi-sovereignty data services, we also had customer activities from five national governments and the State of Florida through Space Florida. The names of all the current Medal of Honor recipients for the National Medal of Honor Museum are now enshrined in our storage on the Moon. Finally we were able to send Imagine Dragons’ lyrics for Children of the Sky from Bethesda Game Studios Games’ Starfield to the Moon in those final moments. Phison Electronics USA’s deep expertise was invaluable and their flash storage worked flawlessly in the space environment.? The Microchip Technology Inc. Polarfire SOC at the heart of the payload was rock solid. Kudos to SpaceBilt for our integrated payload running RISC V. Didn’t miss a beat. TRL 9! Our terrestrial operations were absolutely robust. Our deep partnership with Tierra Luna Engineering, LLC produced our own Mission Control software which was pivotal to our success.? We loved it. Once again the Maritime and Defense Technology Hub in St. Pete, Florida was our secure home for 24x7 operations, but with the wise addition of Flexential cloud services to add cutting edge mirroring of our most critical commanding and data communications.? In Flexential we trust! But the best thing has been to see this team come together on this amazing mission and for them to hit milestone after milestone.? Expertise, preparation and execution.? There is no substitute. We have now pushed the edge of the Cloud into space and, for us, this is just the beginning...

SUCCESS! We have met ALL our flights goals - EVERYTHING we need for our next steps data center, RaaS, DRaaS, and Edge Processing missions in 2027 all done THIS WEEK while en route to the Moon in CisLunar space. Freedom is preforming flawlessly. Our Mission Control too, and now fully qualified running our own Mission Control software as well.
