SpaceX is set to begin launching Starships to Mars in 2026. These initial missions will be uncrewed, focused on testing the spacecraft's ability to land safely on the Martian surface. If successful, the first crewed missions are expected to follow in about four years. Starship, when fully assembled, is the largest and most powerful rocket ever constructed, standing approximately 400 feet (122 meters) tall and producing 16.7 million pounds of thrust at liftoff—almost twice as much as NASA's Artemis program's Space Launch System (SLS). Unlike the expendable SLS, Starship is designed for full and rapid reusability. SpaceX intends to land its Super Heavy booster back on the launch pad after each flight for quick inspection, refurbishment, and relaunch. SpaceX envisions Starship's strength and reusability as key to achieving the long-cherished goal of Mars colonization, a vision championed by Elon Musk. "Flight rate will grow exponentially from there, with the goal of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years," Musk added in the same post. "Being multiplanetary will vastly increase the probable lifespan of consciousness, as we will no longer have all our eggs, literally and metabolically, on one planet." Back in July, The Exploration Company completed its first wind tunnel test campaign. Over a number of weeks, the team explored the hypersonic regime of the Nyx spacecraft, conducting sixteen wind tunnel test conditions. These tests involved a range of analyses, from forces and moments measurements to oil flow visualizations. The data gathered confirms a statically stable shape in the hypersonic regime, shows strong correlation with numerical simulations, and verifies the capsule’s capability to safely re-enter the atmosphere. The Exploration Company plans to begin by using the spacecraft to conduct cargo missions, delivering supplies to and from space stations in low Earth orbit.
