Remember how helpful #telemedicine was during the pandemic – and how the government scrambled to make the service model both safe and accessible? The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration recently decided to make some of those temporary concessions permanent, and Eastman & Smith healthcare lawyer Breanne Rubin explores the three new rules every healthcare organization should know. Highlights include: ~a final rule expanding the circumstances under which Schedule III-V medication, such as Buprenorphine (used to treat opioid use disorder), can be prescribed by telemedicine; ~a final rule which authorizes U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs practitioners to prescribe, by telemedicine, controlled substances to a VA patient, even if they were not the professional who conducted in-person medical exam; and ~updated proposed rules which introduce three types of special registrations allowing medical providers to prescribe medications through telemedicine visits without ever conducting an in-person medical evaluation.
