A message from Graduate Recruitment Specialist, and EMS Alum, Adam King: I don't know about you, but reading or listening to the news on a daily basis causes me deep concern. Stories of war, famine, pandemics, sexual and domestic violence, racial animosity, and political upheaval dominate the airwaves. In the face of it all, it can leave us feeling small and unsure how to respond. We might wonder: "Where is God in the midst of all this? Why is there so much suffering? What am I supposed to do about it?" When I came to EMS to study for a Master of Divinity in 2015, I was also asking these sorts of questions, and many others. Over the course of three years, through amazing classes on theology, history, ethics, social movements, personal formation, and even in my Greek and Hebrew classes, I kept finding myself circling back to the same thing over and over. All my questions could be summed up in one question: What does Love look like? I believe that this is at the core of what an education at Eastern Mennonite Seminary means. In all we do, we seek to know and practice Love. And this is not a flimsy, wishy-washy sort of Love. It's the kind of love that: - opens homeless shelters - organizes community action to address food deserts and transportation - leads vibrant congregations in communities where Christianity is illegal - activates hundreds of pastors and faith leaders to physically confront dangerous white supremacist movements EMS graduates are practicing this sort of world changing Love throughout the world. It's Divine Love. It's Love that knows that Peace requires Justice. It's Love that embraces and protects the outsiders and outcasts. It's Love that refuses to accept discrimination of any kind and seeks to dismantle oppressive systems. At EMS, we study and practice the sort of Love that was embodied by Jesus and poured out through God's people throughout history. So, the question is this friend, what does Love look like to you? Do you find yourself wanting to dive deeper into this question and others like it? Do you want to be equipped to ignite deep change in your community?
