Founded in 1946, Easter Seals Greater Houston serves individuals with ALL types of disabilities, as well as their families. Through a staff of over 240+ professionals, we serve more than 12,500 families annually through direct services in Houston and surrounding counties and reach over 24,000 monthly through our program websites. Easter Seals Greater Houston, Inc. is a non-profit corporation established to provide comprehensive services to individuals of all ages with all types of disabilities and their families. As the only local organization providing comprehensive services to individuals and families affected by disabilities, Easter Seals of Greater Houston operates multiple programs: Early Childhood Intervention; Respite Services; Toy/Tech and BridgingApps; High School/High Tech; Home of Your Own; Children's Therapy Services; The Caroline School; Camps, Counseling and Case Management; Transition Services, Adult Services and Military / Veteran Services. WHY IT IS IMPORTANT? The U.S. Census in 2000 reported one in five Americans is living with a long-term condition or other disability which means that the demand for our services continues to grow. The CDC reports that one in six children has a developmental delay and we are here to meet the needs of a large and growing population. Easter Seals’ mission is to provide exceptional services to people with disabilities and their families so they can live, work, learn and play in our communities.

I spend a lot of time in the air and it’s rare that I see people with disabilities treated respectfully by airline staff - that pains me to say but it’s true. I often witness impatience or disregard. But today, I am very happy to say on a morning flight from Dulles to O’Hare on United Airlines, Michelle, a flight attendant I watched assist a blind woman, exercised great respect, kindness, good humor, and patience. She not only helped the woman to her seat, she explained in detail that the lavatory was located 15 rows behind her and showed her where the outlet was under her seat. She also pointed out where the fan was above her and told her not to hesitate to ring her call button if she needed anything at all. She did so respectfully not condescendingly or smugly. Her demeanor and actions reflect exactly how all people with disabilities should be treated - gave me hope. Well done Michelle and good job United! Easterseals was created to advocate for and support children with disabilities. Over time, our mission expanded to include adolescents and adults and then later, to include older Americans and veterans with and without disabilities. Throughout its evolution, Easterseals' commitment to supporting disabled people of all ages and all disabilities remained central to its mission and that commitment is stronger than ever today. We must preserve our commitment in the face of uncertainty and confusion and strive to be a purveyor of facts, a beacon of nonpartisan clarity, and an arbiter of fairness to people with disabilities. I remain convinced that the key to changing misconceptions is education. Tolstoy said, "Every misconception is a poison. There are no harmless misconceptions." The biases people hold regarding disability largely stem from a lack of information. Educate people about what disability is and is not, and those misconceptions, fears, and biases are knocked down.
