18 October was the EU Anti-Trafficking Day: 7000 victims of human trafficking are identified in the EU each year. Many remain undetected. While the EASTEAMS project primarly aims at countering and preventing migrant smuggling, the link to human trafficking is not far away. Therefore, the training programme, which is part of EASTEAMS, will also address human trafficking and smuggling of migrants. A link, the Council of Europe also states:

?? A year ago, in September 2023, the EASTEAMS project started! Thank you very much to everybody who contributed with their work, ideas, explanations or suggestions so that it is successfully running. It is time to review, so we will keep you posted on the work and release our first newsletter soon.

The Kick-off meeting of EASTEAMS (European Actions Strengthening Teams Establishment Against Migrant Smuggling) was successfully held on September 26, 2023, in Athens, at the premises of the Center for Security Studies (KEMEA). KEMEA actively participates with its know-how and expertise in the project’s implementation, coordinated by the Hellenic Police. ?? EASTEAMS is the first European Program of the Internal Security Fund of the European Union, which promotes direct cooperation with Asia, through the creation of a Common Operational Partnership (COP), between the competent Law Enforcement Authorities of Pakistan and the Destination EU Countries (Greece, Cyprus, France, Germany) and aims to prevent illegal #smuggling of migrants from the countries of Central and South Asia (Afghanistan, Pakistan) to the European Union while dismantling the involved transnational organized criminal networks and rackets that profit from this illegal activity. At the meeting members of the consortium and specifically, representatives from the Hellenic Police, the Ministry of Justice (Greece), the French Ministry of Interior, the Cyprus Police and the Bavarian Academy of Applied Sciences of Public Administration and Legal Affairs, participated as well as honorary quests and Officials from the Federal Investigation Agency of Pakistan, the Interpol, the UN/IOM, the EU Delegation in Pakistan, Police Liaison Officers, and of course?the Project’s Officer. ? KEMEA actively engaged in the drafting of the MoU signed by the Hellenic Police and?the Federal Investigation Agency of Pakistan. The #EASTEAMS project was presented by the Hellenic Police at the ???????????????? ?????????????????????? ???????????????? ???? ?????????????????? ?????????????? ?????????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ???????? ?????????????????? in ??Islamabad, Pakistan, from 26th to 27th of April 2024. The event was hosted by the Government of Pakistan in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime, Pakistan (UNODC) as well as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and was supported by the European Union (EU). The workshop covered the project topic of improving migration management and migrant protection in selected silk route countries. It brought together key stakeholders from Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Greece, Italy, Iran, and other relevant EU countries. Mechanisms to improve information sharing between countries were explored and victim-centered approaches in pursuing combat of migrant smuggling were emphasized. Last week the EASTEAMS consortium had the honour to meet the SCOPE project team of the German Federal Police in ??Potsdam, Germany. Among others, the project teams exchanged their experiences regarding the set-up of Common Operational Partnerships and the implementation of secure and encrypted police working tools. ??Thank you very much for having us! Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is used by law enforcement agencies, government agencies or businesses to collect information and data from open sources and thereby achieve investigations.??? The internet is an important source for OSINT, but also the media, public governmental data etc. can be informative. ??The EASTEAMS sister project, OSINT RADAR, links OSINT investigations to encountering illegal migrant smuggling.
